I’m sure they’ll still send Jose out there now and then but he’s the team’s primary utility player, and needs to be available for playing the outfield as well. He also isn’t as good a hitter as Edwin (and is also righthanded, so there’s no platoon opportunity. When facing a southpaw Bautista usually plays left field.)
Logically, they should mostly start Encarnacion and bring Bautista in for defense when the opportunity arises.
Sorry to revive this zombie, but I just got back from a week’s vacation, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about the Giants
Early 60s (1964? 65?), Spahn and Marichal (early in Marichal’s career, late in Spahn’s) matched up in the ultimate pitcher’s duel. Both pitchers went the distance and put up zeros for something like 16 innings, with the Giants finally winning 1-0.
The Giants manager asked Marichal if we was done, and he said he was going to keep going out there as long as the other side keeps sending that old man out to the mound. (I imagine Spahn said something similar, substituting “whippersnapper” for “old man”)
When McClain was pitching for the Tigers the manager came out during a close game. He told him I am going to take you out. Denny said who you got on that bench that can pitch better than me. He left him in and he won. Denny has 28 complete games in 1968.
