Baseball June 2009

OK, Haren is a fucking stud. He’s wiping out my Reds right now to the tune of 6-0 in the sixth. This is the second time I’ve watched him pitch, and he’s really impressive. And I hate him for it.

And he is the only good news for the D-backs this year. Looks like Webb is out for the year and I’m sure the D-backs will be sellers in July.

What’s Webb’s issue? Out for the year? Really?

Also: Bronson Arroyo needs to be tossed on the scrap heap of pitchers that were once decent with a really good team (Boston) yet are exposed as pitching charlatans once placed on a mediocre team (Reds).

Fuck.

Here is the last story I saw on it.

The Red Sox were up 10-1 over he O’s and gave up 5 per in the 7th and 8th. The O’s are trying to close out this remarkable comeback.

Yanks won their 6th straight.

Albert Pujols up to 30 dingers already.

  • Pujols has hit 30 homers every year the nine years he has been in the league, the only player to do that.
  • This is only the 11th time a player has hit 30 homers before July 1
  • He’s also hitting .328, and for him that’s actually a bit LOW, if you can believe that

Forget steroids. Test Pujols for hydraulics. He’s an android.

Wow. 86 pitch two hit complete game shutout for Jason Marquis and the Rockies. Against the best team in baseball. We just might have something going on here. Marquis is now 10-5, best in the NL. He beat Jason Billingsly, who is 9-4 and struck out 11 in 7 2/3 innings tonight.

Point of order:

The Dodgers might have the best record in baseball, but calling them the best team in baseball is, at this juncture, giving them rather more credit than they deserve. IMO.

They’re about to get Manny back and Torre has yet to wreck the bullpen. Right now they are the best.

He hit two HRs last night, driving in three runs. Unfortunately, he accounted for all the Cards’ offense, and they lost 6-3. And new acquisition Mark DeRosa might be hurt already. He left the game early with pain in his wrist and is having x-rays today. Well, shit.

I just can’t agree. They’ve won 2 games more than Boston, for example, but the Red Sox play most of their games against the AL East, while the Dodgers play most of theirs against the NL West. The Dodgers are 20 games over .500, and 16 of those 20 are from winning in their own division, which is not exactly the strongest in baseball.

The Dodgers are a real good team, and they’re going to be right in the mix when the playoffs come around, but to label them the best in baseball right now is a real stretch.

The night after Boston choked a 10-1 lead to your team, I am surprised you would pick Boston, but I get your point. If Boston did not pull off a crazy 9-0 records against the Yanks, they would not even be in first. I don’t think they are as good as their record.

It’s the best division in the National League. You’re going by preseason prognostications, which have been proven wrong.

The Red Sox haven’t played much of a scedule outside of their division. They are 5-10 against the AL West.

I really hate that team calendars for a given year are manufactured so long before the season. I flipped my Dodger calendar to July today. And who is pictured for the month of July?

Andruw Jones.

Is it August yet?

So, i should dismiss Boston because of a single choked game, and you’re willing to dismiss them because of a “crazy 9-0 record” against the Yankees?

You might be right that Boston aren’t as good as their record suggests, but your reasoning here is rather odd. Anyway, according to their X W-L, both the Dodgers and the Red Sox are currently about 2 games over their pythagorean expectations.

As for last night’s game, i’m under no illusion that it’s indicative of either Boston or Baltimore’s long-term likelihood of success this season. It was very nice to watch, though. I only wish i could have been at Camden Yards to see all the disappointed Red Sox fans.

The NL West is certainly stronger than was predicted, although their numbers against the East and the Central, as well as interleague, don’t really support a clear determination of them as the strongest NL division.

Anyway, all this is sort of silly. I never said the Dodgers were a bad team; i merely noted that crowning them the Best Team in Baseball right now is a bit premature.

Think of it this way Andruw Jones is beating up on the Angels tonight!

Right. And we’re paying him to do so. Remind me how that was supposed to make me feel better?

Beating the DBacks 1-0 in an intensely pitched game is like watching paint dry. Two of the worst offenses in MLB duking it out in a pitching duel. Yikes.

Wow. Colby Rasmus just hit a walk-off HR in the 10th. And here I was just hoping he’d get on base for Pujols (who, by the way was 2-for-2 with 2 walks tonight). Good for Rasmus!

Looks like Brandon Webb is not going to have the shoulder surgery after all.

Story

From the article:

Webb’s interest in returning to the mound in September could be motivated by a desire to persuade the Diamondbacks to pick up his option for 2010, which is worth $8.5 million with a $2 million buyout.

I’m not sure I’d be willing to take a chance on Webb right now with that kind of money. The D-backs have a stud pitcher in Haren. Sure, Webb could return to his near Cy Young performance last year, but this injury looks quite serious.

Nice comeback by the Rangers last night. Francisco blew a 3 run lead in the top of the 9th. This is the second time recently that Francisco has blown a save recently. The previous time was the extra innings game against the D-backs which the Rangers also came back to win.
