Baseball May 2009

…and the Mets pull out a win against the Red Sox in the 9th, doing it course with a long ball from a bench player, and then holding on in the bottom of the inning with great defense, just like they’ve done it all year. (Cough.)

That was a nice nice win. Particularly for us Met fans who live in Boston

The replay system does need some work though. The point of it was in part to limit arguments. It doesn’t require a five minute discussion before going into the booth nor another 5 minutes to discuss the decision with the managers. Good thing too they called it a home-run as Shefield failed to score from first. The key point there isn’t that Shefield is slow but rather the Mets have no one faster to pinch run for him as the tying run. I understand they are down a guy with Reyes hurt and another with the DH, but you need to have someone there. Not good roster design.

Great comeback for the Yankees last night. Cano and Cabrera are playing like they did a few years ago. Looks like they may have matured a bit and realized the nightlife is more fun when the baseball is good too.

Good day for the NY teams. The Jays continued their slide and the Mets beat Pappelbon (who seems to fist pump and gyrate more than Joba without the constant stupid reporting about it) as the Yanks had another big 9th inning rally to hand Lidge another loss and blown save. Funny how it was Rivera I was reading about maybe being done. Too many sports writers are morons just filling there columns.
This all ties the Yanks with the Sox and only ½ game behind the Jays as the Mets are only ½ a game behind the Phillies. Hopefully both teams with today.
CC for the Yanks vs. Hamels and Tim Redding for the Mets vs. Wakefield of Boston.
A-Rod is only hitting for power so far since he returned but probably has had more big (clutch) hit already this year than all of last years.

Well, he will be done some day, and they all want to look like the genius who called it, even though I think people have been saying that he’s just about done since, oh, 2001. Personally, he’s such an outlier that I wouldn’t discount him from unleashing a devasting changeup and still dominating until he’s 47.

I was thinking a few weeks ago how disorienting it will be for Yankees fans when there will finally be no remnants of the 90s teams: I’m sure a huge percentage of Yankees fans still count heavily on the presence of Jeter, Rivera, Posada, and Pettitte just lifting everyone else. How many other teams still have 4 main guys from 10 years ago? I just think it will be really weird for longtime fans.

Phillies are starting off with a 2-0 lead over Sabathia.

On my way to watch the Dodgers (hopefully) polish off the Angels in this series. It has been an entertaining, closely played couple of games thus far.

So far, so good. I like watching the Dodgers feed on MLB.com. Scully is far better than the Angels announcers. Don’t worry, the D-backs will take care of the Padres starting tomorrow.

Sweet, the Reds win in the 11th in walkoff fashion, 4-3. That’s two of three from the Indians. Up next, the sinking Fastros in a three game set in the Nasty Nati.

Ugh. I hate when my team loses in extra innings. Yanks had a chance to win it with Teixeira and A-Rod up with MISP, but they didn’t get it done.

You know what I hate? When my team’s closer blows two games in a row! Now, yesterday’s game was really disappointing with Happ’s excellent game. But, it was understandable given that the HR that tied it up was hit by the guy who is one of the game’s best hitter. But, today’s game wasn’t as excusable.I am glad the Phillies pulled it off in extras. And, they really had to earn it. That double play was excellent.

It was a good series, I thought, a lot of good pitching on both sides and clutch hitting as well. Last year the Phils had a lot of trouble with interleague play. They are starting off good this time. I hope they can keep it up.

I was shocked by how many Phillies fans were in the park through the weekend.

Nice sweep by the Twinkies…NOT!
Although I notice now how much playoffs can help you get TV time. Brewers have been on nationally at least 3 times already, and another one coming on Tuesday.

I have seen more of them on TV this year than the last two combined I swear

I’m watching the first part of the Yankees and Rangers this morning. Wow, the Texas fans don’t like Tex or A-Rod at all. That is cool. Ranger fans are starting to believe in this team and it doesn’t look like the stadium is full of Yankees fans.

Off to the D-backs and Padres. I think the D-backs will cool off the Padres. Too bad the roof will be closed. That is criminal on a holiday weekend.

Quite the pitching duel going on in Milwaukee. Carpenter had a perfect game going till the 7th, when he gave up a single. Gallardo has been sharp too, giving up just 2 hits and 4 walks. Still 0-0 in the 8th as I type.

I know!

This game is crazy…it’s also something to mention Gallardo was holding his no-hitter into the 5th (it wasn’t perfect), and Carp just lost his in the 7th.

I was praying both would send no-hitters into the 9th, then Prince would walk-off homer…but as of this typing it’s bottom of the 8th and there still have been only three hits the ENTIRE GAME, and a total of 16Ks.

They have reason to dislike Teixiera. He’s not terribly likable anyway, but there’s a history there.

But, is there anyone outside New York City who doesn’t despise Alex Rodriguez? He’s a cheater, a bad sportsman, and a jackass. Hell, even a lot of people in NYC hate him.

Walk off single by Mike Cameron to cement a Brew Crew win.
Great win to break off the losing streak, GREAT win over a phenomenal pitcher who was on today.

Hats off to the Cards and especially to Chris Carpenter.

Well, drat! McClellan just gave up the game-winning single in the 10th. A hard-fought win for the Brewers! At least I can console myself by admiring Carpenter’s pristine ERA, still 0.00 after 23 innings, I believe

I find it very hard to root for Rodriguez, but a a Yankee fan I’m guilty of enjoying the spoils of his talent, enhanced or not. All in all, I’d rather he was not a Yankee.

Dodgers trying to give back the 7-0 lead they took over the Rockies. I’m feeling a roller coaster game unless Weaver can get us out of the bases-loaded jam.
