Baseball May 2009

For a slightly different way of viewing division races, i really like playing around at Baseball Race.

It’s a flash-based site that allows you to watch any league or division race, for any given year, going back to 1901. It’s a lot of fun.

Fun for us, and I’m guessing Fox would be really pleased with the potential ratings draw. Taking a quick look at other teams doing well right now, it’d be pretty funny, in a schadenfreude kind of way, if we had the Royals and Brewers in the WS, for example. But I’m just evil that way.

ETA: Very cool site, mhendo! I could get stuck playing with that for a while…

So the Yankees have won 9 in a row.

That is completely unacceptable and I think it’s some sort of anti-Red Sox conspiracy that involves Toronto, Minnisota, and Baltimore. If they don’t lose to the Phillies I’m going to start investigating.

You’ve been warned, Steinbrenner.

I went to college at Northern Kentucky University with a bunch of crazy UK-loving friends from Frankfort and Lexington.

I’ve lived in the Cincinnati area since about 1993, longest I’ve ever been in one place.

BTW, what part of the area do you live in? Next time the Cards play the Reds, we might have to grab a beer and settle this like Dopers.

(I’m in the Mt. Lookout area)

I currently live in about the most southeastern part of Indiana there is, Hidden Valley (technically Lawrenceburg). Hrm. My brother, sister-in-law and my cousin all live in Mt Lookout, in that apartment complex near the UDF in the square. I think it has like white brick columns with lanterns on top of them at the entrance? I think it’s off Delta Ave. Not sure.

And what do you mean “a” beer?

Yeah, I walk past that place all the time on my way to Zips or the coffee shop.

“A” beer is an imprecise measure. Glass…pitcher…keg…all might be called “a” beer.

I didn’t realize interleague started tonight. The Cards are off to an early lead against KC. Cool. I don’t carry any grudges against KC. I mean, the '85 series was nearly 24 years ago. Nope. No grudge here.

Don’t worry, the Phils are taking care of business.

The Rays look like they may have woken up as well. They’re putting the hurt on the Marlins right now 13-1.

And, I’m headed to my first D-backs game of the year on Monday afternoon. They should easily take care of the Padres. I can’t ever seem to time it right to see Haren pitch.

I hope you’re right, but those are dangerous words to throw out there before the series has even started. Good luck! I hope you guys cool off the Padres, frankly.

The Padres have quit on the season and they’re embarrassed about the Peavy trade rejection. Neither the Padres nor the Rockies will matter in the NL West. I just hope the D-backs can get it together and make a challenge. I’m still undecided on the Giants.

The same Padres who have won six in a row? Management may have quit, but the players haven’t. I’m not resting until the Dodgers have actually clinched. And probably not then, either.

The Padres are this year’s Oakland A’s. Decent until June and will then die when Peavy is traded and anyone else they can dump is gone.

Brewers, reality…reality, Brewers…
Holy Crap did we get killed…

(Any chance of us landing Peavy? Hell it worked last year…)

The Nats are going to have to win a game in extra innings sometime.

Right?

I mean god knows, we’re not doing too well with that whole “win games in regulation thing,” but…

Yes, Peavy wants to stay in the National League. The Brewers need pitching. I’m not sure where he will end up. If he was going to the Cubs, I’d figure that deal would have been done. I’m sure the Phillies or the Mets would take a top pitcher. The Dodgers as long shot.

I was thinking of starting a drinking game to take a shot whenever the Mets make an error… thought my liver may not make it through the season.

Jeez… 3 more today. At least they pulled it out for Santana though… but, jeez…

Reds take the first game against the smelly Indians…Arroyo, Mr All Or None, was on last night, thankfully.

Homer Bailey starts for the Reds tonight. Could be brilliant, could be a disaster.

Phillies are on top on the Yankees again. I really thought the Marlins might be a challenge in the NL East, but right now I’d put my money on the Phils in that division. The more I watch of this Phillies team, the more I like. Can they get one more pitcher at the trade deadline?

Rangers beating up on the Astros. This Rangers team could take the AL West. They’ve got enough trade bait to get another arm which they will need. Still, unless the Angels get hot, no one is going to challenge the Rangers.

Guess I should have shut up. Yanks tied it up in the bottom of the ninth.

The Rangers always start off strong, particularly with the bats. Then the heat of summer starts taking a major toll on their usually-already-shaky pitching.
