I understand that in MLB and the minor leagues they have a bullpen. They have many pitchers ready to play.
But do they do the same thing at schools and little league? How about if you are just playing a social game at the park?
We had them in high school. In little league, the games weren’t usually long enough to need two pitchers. If they did need a sub, he would either get 10 pitches on the mound, or warm up on the outside of the fence. In little league, though, since the pitchers were usually the better fielders on the team, also, it tended to be a shortstop or first baseman who subbed in.
The only organized social games I’ve been part of are softball, where the pitcher usually doesn’t even warm up.
At the high school competitive you start to see bullpens because the players have specialized their positions by high school.
I coach in the local little league system. Most levels do not use a bullpen because players, even pitchers, often play more than one position. The fields do have a little place to warm up a pitcher, with a pitching rubber and a home plate, that is in foul territory, but nothing like a major-league bullpen. I think only the top one or two levels actually warm up a pitcher before making a substitution, and I’ve never seen more than one pitcher at a time warming up.
