Baseball Rule 7.05(h)

This is regarding the 5 ways to reach base post in the archive.

I read rule 7.05(h) that Cecil based his reasoning on, and it isn’t clear that it is the batter being referred to. According to his interpretation, if the pitcher throws the ball in the stands or dugout, the batter is awarded a base. However, section 7 regards the runners, not the batter. There is reference to a “batter runner”. I’m not saying Cec is wrong on this, but perhaps someone here can clear up exactly what a “batter runner” is and if that is different from the guy at the plate.

A lot of this was covered in the forum on Cecil’s columns.

However, a batter-runner is what the batter is called after he hits the ball in fair territory and starts running.

Where can i find that discussion? My point with this post is that Cecil describes rule 7.05 as a fifth way to reach base when I don’t think it is a fifth way. In order for the batter to advance he has to become a batter runner.

It’s in Comments on Cecil’s Columns which is where this thread should go.

It’s a rare thrill to send a thread upstairs to the Big Guy’s forum.

Hey Arnold! Catch!

Arnold tries to catch it, drops the ball, picks it up and puts it in his glove hoping no one notices, but too late. Now you know why I’m always last picked when I play softball!
