Baseball: What's a Pull Hitter?

I’m a right-handed batter. If Baseball Announcer Guy refers to me as a “pull hitter,” what does that mean? I assume it has something to do with where most of a batter’s hits go.

So, being a right-handed batter, does being a “pull hitter” mean that most of my hits go to left field (as if my bat pulls the ball across my body and toward left field)? What’s the opposite of a pull hitter?

It looks like you’ve pretty much got it down. If you’re a righty, then you’re standing on the left side of the plate, and if you pull the ball, you’re hitting the ball to left field (reverse directions for a left-handed batter).

The opposite of a pull hitter would be … get ready … an “opposite field” hitter. At least, that’s the description I’ve always heard.

Correct on the pull hitter. The opposite is called an “away hitter”, or sometimes an “opposite-field hitter”.
