are basement windows made from pressure treated wood?
I think they’re actually made of glass.
Mine were a simple steel frame, later replaced with your average vinyl window.
Our egress window is just a normal window, like you’d put anywhere else on the house. The window isn’t constantly wet, or generally any wetter than other windows. It’s vinyl, but if it were wood it wouldn’t need to be pressure treated.
Our casement windows were just those very basic 1’ by 3’ steel and glass windows.
No.
Usually not. Local code may not allow it. Most replacement basement windows are vinyl. Vinyl is a good material for this since basement windows tend to get wet. If you have good wood windows make sure to keep them well painted to prevent rot and put covers over window wells to keep moisture out.
We don’t have a cover over our window well. If we did, I’d think it would just trap humidity in the well. We have a drainage tube, though, so we don’t get standing water in the well. If we didn’t have good drainage, I’d want a cover.
mine are wood i would think they would rot why don tthey
How old are they?
Wood lasts a long time if remains dry most of the time. Some woods are more rot resistant than others, and if they’re painted or stained they may resist rot for a long time.
Or they are actually made from pressure treated wood.
My understanding is that you want to use pressure-treated wood when there is direct contact with the ground, but the basement windows shouldn’t be contacting the ground normally.
They are in contact with concrete block wall which is porous. I would think this would rot the wood. Also they get rained on a lot and are close to the ground.
In Canada (and I’d suspect elsewhere), wood that is in contact with concrete is required to be pressure treated, or separated by tar paper.
Is YOUR basement window frame pressure treated? Dunno.
Are you talking about the frames or the windows themselves? Basement windows are often mounted in a pressure treated frame. That’s not the wood holding the glass, it’s a frame around the whole window unit. I’ve never seen pressure treated windows though. The pieces have to be milled and most places don’t want that in their shop.
If you have a wooden basement window it’s unlikely to be pressure treated. It probably rather old. Almost all new basement windows are steel or vinyl now.
my house was built in the mid 70’s not very old
