I need to create what amounts basically to a custome power strip. The end product should be:
A 4 or 6 outlet junction panel that runs to a master cut off switch then to a standard grounded (3 prong North American) plug that will plug into my wall.
What kind of wire and kill switch should I use? Any advice otherwise?
As I work at the computer I am looking at two commercially available 6-outlet power strips that have switches on them What is special about your needs that requires a custom strip?
I think he wants a remote power switch. Maybe he wants the power strip hidden under a desk, but the switch on the workspace for easy access. If this is the case, then this should do nicely.
QED just about has it right. I need the remote switch as well as a much longer cord than an affordable standard power strip has (I’d like 10-12 feet minimum).
It’s difficult to know what sort of switch you need without knowing what your peak load is going to be. The outlets will be rated at 15 amps each, but you’re most likely not going to have that much running at one time.
You can purchase simple toggle switches that are rated up to 30 amps (I think - it’s been awhile). Keep in mind that the cord for most commercial power strips will only be rated for about 20 amps.
You would install the power strip, cut off the three-prong plug, pass the neutral and ground through the switch box, and connect the hot lead to the load side of the switch. Then take a piece of 3-conductor cord (or cut one end off of an extension cord) and run it from the switch to the outlet.
