So , i’m taking the kid (8) to a Lakers game next week.
I havent a clue about basketball and have never even watched a game.
I know the basic rules , travelling and what not , but I’m probably going to be asked a whole bunch of questions and havent a clue about what to do , how to act , what to say.
So whats the basketball arena atmosphere , how long is a game , can I use a camcorder , will i look like an idiot if i do , when do you shout , stand , cheer , curse ? , Anything that might help me pass myself off as even mildly knowledgable will help , links and whatnot welcome .
I don’t think cameras are allowed, much less camcorders. Copyright and all that.
Cheer:
Your team (Lakers?) scores. Louder for a dunk.
A foul is called on the opponent.
The opponent calls time out.
Your favorite player hits the bench. (Applause for the “job” he did)
An out of bounds ball is ruled in your team’s possession.
Those seats, in section 137, are pretty good. They’re sort of looking at the court from the corner. I’ve always preferred looking from the side (with seats paralell to midcourt being ideal), because seats in the corners and ends make it more difficult to follow action on the opposite end of the court.
That being said, you ARE in the lower section, which is nice. If moving requires you to move to the upper section (any section not in the 100’s), then don’t move. Being anywhere in the lower section is superior to the best seats in the upper section (at least in my opinion).
Bruce_Daddy has all the cheering moments pretty much covered. But in my experience there are only a handful of times you boo in a game.
Boo when opposing team is introduced.
Boo when there is a questionable call against your team.
Boo when someone commits a very hard foul against your team.
Many teams (on their home court only) have a habit of “riding” a player on the opposing team. They boo whenever that particular player touches the ball. I noticed your game is in Memphis, but I don’t know if your a Grizzlies or Lakers fan. If you are a Grizzlies fan, and they have this tradition, then that is also a good time to boo.
Do not boo when (contrary to what Bruce_Daddy said:
Your team calls a timeout (unless your at a Knicks game…)
Your opponent scores.
Those are times to remain silent rather than boo.
