Battery charging question

Trying to get the car started, but the batteries are low. I have two 6v batteries, and I connected the positive lead of the battery charger to the positive pole, and the negative to the negative. Seems to have helped a little, but there’s still not enough juice to turn it over more than a couple of times.

The charger is behaving differently from what I expect/noticed before. I should have remembered the markings on the gauge before posting, but I didn’t. The gauge is mostly green, and it’s red on the right side where it says ‘Start’. The needle is on the left when the charger is not in use. It’s reading toward the right, right now. ISTR that when a battery is charged is goes to the left, but I’m not sure. There is a slight hum from the charger for a few seconds, and then there is a buzz when the needle goes into the red Start area for a few seconds.

What is going on?

Never mind. The car didn’t start. Battery charger failed. Tried jumping it, but things got hot and smelly. We ended up pushing the car.

Is this your MG?

Now that is just a silly question. No one should attempt to operate an MG without a British mechanic along for the ride.

That is, after all, what the other seat is for.

You connected positive on one 6 volt to the positive on the next 6v then to the car? Same for the negative terminals? Is this correct?

You got 6 volts output with this parallel connection. No wonder it didn’t do much to pop off the engine. To get 12 volts you would need a series connection.

Sorry about the stink. If it’s the MG, always park on a hill

I connected positive to the positive post of one battery, and negative to the negative post of the other battery. Should be 12v total.

I have always been taught and have always been successful with linking the positive terminal of one battery with the positive batterry of the other battery and then linking the negative terminal of the good battery with the engine block of the car with the dead or dying battery. It works every time.

Let me see if I understand…

The car is 6 volt, with one battery?

And you tried to jump it with another 6V battery?

If you hooked up the cables as you say (positive to positive, neg to neg, which is correct for jumping) you didn’t make 12 volts, you made six, jumping your dead battery with a good one.

Or am I confused, and you have a 12 volt system using two 6 volt batteries? If so, I don’t think you have the cables hooked correctly. You were making only 6 volts.

Is your charger a 12 volt or 6 volt charger? If you were hooking it up wrong, it wouldn’t work right (and might even blow up a battery, sixes don’t like taking twelve volts)
