I am reading that title by C. Van Woodward.
I’ve not read a work of history before wherein the author refers to ships and planes of the USN as “our”.
I am interested in the battle off Samar, were a large Japanese force turned away from the destroyers and jeep carriers that Halsey had left in place when he attacked a decoy Japanese force.
There are several unusual incidents, one I read of in a different book where a pilot fired off all his ammunition and shot his pistol at a cruiser. Some aircraft that had no more ammunition continued to attack to distract the Japanese from attacking the jeep carriers. Woodward writes of CVE aircraft landing, rearming and refueling on US Army Dulag airfield. “By some unknown means one pilot managed to get a new wing on his plane.” That amazes me.
Regarding the Japanese fleet turning away from the destroyers and CVEs, I had not realized before that Admiral McCain was only an hour away.
