Battle markers at Gettysburg park-meaning of symbols

BiblioCat and I spent some time today on the (self-guided) battlefield tour and noted a handful of symbols which adorn the various markers. Seen were: 5 pointed star, three-leaf clover, simple cross (looks like +), cross looking more like a maltese cross, and a crescent moon. State participation isn’t it, as the marks included various single and group state monuments. Although they seemed grouped in small areas, indicating perhaps specific skirmishes or engagements, they would reappear in other areas apart from the first grouping seen.

Civil War and Gettysburg battle-wise folks, what say ye?

A Mason and Irishman, I’m guessing, no?

None of the symbols were observed on the same monument or marker. Without investigating Masonic history and it’s influence in Civil War soldiers, I couldn’t say one way or the other.

Unit symbols? The Irish Brigade. South Carolina militia. The Maltese Cross I believe was the symbol for one of the Union Corps. Just guessing. Its late and my head is foggy.

They’re Corps Badges.

Wonderful! Thank you very much!

See I figured it was something like that. I was just too sleepy to find a cite.

Thanks for the link, cckerberos. We figured it had to be something like that, but hadn’t found anything in the information we had on hand.

No problem. I was just there in March, so knew what you guys were talking about right away.
