There don’t seem to be a huge amount of unlocks or the BC2 equivalent of MW2’s perks. Am I correct in thinking there is no real oportunity in this game to become somewhat godlike like in MW2?
That’s such a good thing. I traded in my copy of Modern Warfare today against a copy of God of War III. I’m enjoying the teamwork and slower pace of Battlefield a lot I have to say. Have maxed out the medic and have only one gun left to go on recon and assault. I really like changing class as the situation changes or for tactical reasons e.g start as an engineer so I can lay down some antitank mines and then after the first death change to assult/medic to hold them off and support my team with health/ammo.
Great stuff.
Also there is no better rush that leading a helo by 20-30 feet with a RPG and blowing the fecker out of the sky.
I kind of agree that it’s a good thing. While I like being awesome in MW2 with my marathon pro, lightweight pro, ninja pro, p90 with rapid fire, stinger, claymore. I like the idea that in BC2 I am playing against people who’s relative character strength is closer to my own. More of an even playing field.
They are quite different games. In MW2 the godlike abilities one can acquire provides fun, in BC2 the more level playing field and the thinking about what you’re doing provides fun.
Quoted for the truth.
Within the first hour of playing I had formed a squad with a mate and was there trying to defend when some attackers had gone around and nicked our Apache. It was there killing everything that moved and I vowed to bring it down. And down it came to squeals of delight from me, possibly deafening my squad mate.
I am loving the multiplayer aspect of this game so much more than the MW style of perks. Yet it is customisable. I’ve seen recon guys with shotguns, well, I’ve seen them run over my dead body
It’s also fun just to 40mm a hole in the wall just by the corner, run in, stab the enemy watching the door and move on to complete the objective. The game does destructible terrain in the right way.
Welcome to a game that has sustained popularity and interest, as opposed to shallow gameplay.
Hell, Modern Warfare 2 should be the poster child of shallow gameplay in an FPS.
But MW2 isn’t meant to be deep. It’s meant to be an outlet for mindless fun.
Question re BC2 - How do I favourite a server from inside it? I seem to only be able to favourite a server before I actually play it. And after I’ve played it it doesn’t appear in the ‘history’ tab. I seem to only have two servers in there, the same two I played the day I got the game.
Then Modern Warfare 2 will just flounder and fade away. Yes, it’s still pretty damned popular, but if you want the very definition of “mass-produced crap video game”, then Modern Warfare 2 is your game.
You should add another hyphen before ‘crap’ because it is not a ‘crap’ game. But I can understand it being labelled/pigeon-holed as ‘mass-produced-crap’ like a Michael Bay film.
It’s war porn. Some people like that stuff just because it’s war porn. Others, especially because Call of Duty 4 was a good step forward, expected more.
I, for one, am horribly disappointed with it.
This concludes the hijack.
Will it’s the first and only COD game I’ve played, so I’ve not been ‘spoiled’ by better COD games.
Really, it’s not even “better”. It’s just more of the same. There’ve been no great innovations since the perk system. World at War at least had some interesting variation in some of the weapons. In Modern Warfare 2, you’ve got practically two or three guns within your weapon type (the SCAR and AK47 are pratically the same gun as are the M4 and ACR in the assault rifles section).
Last week or two weeks ago steam put up a 4 pack of the game for $150, but they screwed something up and removed it. Now it’s back. Some of the friends I was going to buy the 4 pack with went ahead and bought it anyway since they didn’t know if it would become available again, so I’m looking for 3 people to buy the game with if anyone is interested. It’s $37 a piece - one guy has to buy the $150 package (and gets 3 copies to gift), but everyone else can just paypal him back their end of the cost. PM me or hit me up on steam if interested.
SenorBeef, I’m a mostly-lurker, but I would be interested if you don’t find anyone else to take you up on that offer, and can pay you back via paypal. My steam name is “Karrius”.
I can’t send you a PM (I guess you have them turned off) so contact me on steam for the paypal info.
If you exit a game before it’s over do you still get the xp/score?
I was in a squad deathmatch with two other people, it was going on and on and on and on for ages. I needed to leave so I did. I didn’t see any bars increase in length like you do at the end of a game. But I think I still had a special item unlock and a pin unlock.
Now having played the game, I can confirm that this either isn’t true or changed since you posted it. If you pick a narrow search criteria, say, only search for non-empty squad rush games (where only like 10 servers will result), the search only takes like 2 seconds. A full game type search excluding empty and full game only takes about 10 seconds for me.
Speaking of squad rush - is that mode universally bugged? I tried it on two seperate servers where at the end of each round, everyone was booted.
The game is pretty good. The spotting system is a million times better than BF2, which was the total game-breaking complaint that ruined the game for me. It’s actually useful now and non-spammy, although having context sensitive communication reduces the spam it does reduce flexibility and usefulness somewhat - you can’t, for example, call for repairs on your vehicle unless you happen to be in line of sight of an engineer. But the tradeoff is probably worth it so that you don’t have to hear someone spamming I NEED REPAIRS I NEED REPAIRS I NEED REPAIRS across the map every 10 seconds.
I haven’t had a chance to fly a helicopter yet, but I’m guessing based on the settings page they are atrociously stupid, since there’s an “ascent” and “descent” key like the UAVs rather than a collective or throttle. It also doesn’t recognize my joystick’s Z axis or Throttle, I guess because it doesn’t match up to a gamepad control (it detects some of my joystick buttons and stuff like RTRIGGER). But it looks like helicopters don’t play a big role in the game anyway. Unfortunate for me, since that was the thing I had most fun in at bf games in the past.
But the infantry combat is really good so far. I’ve mostly played squad deathmatch so I can’t speak to vehicles much yet. The graphics are very good - it’s no Crysis but it doesn’t feel like a game stuck in 2004. Maybe 2006. Progress!
The destructable environment feature is very cool. By the end of a busy match, there’s barely a building left standing.
So as an MW2 replacement that happens to have a very vehicles, rather than a vehicle-heavy game like bf2, it does very well I think. I hope BF3 uses a lot of the ideas but in a bigger scale, more vehicle heavy way. Now that the game was a big success on PC I have high hopes that BF3 won’t be too much of a compromise.
Finally figured out how to fly that chopper.
Interesting game in itself, I hate camping on my sides chopper as its a pain waiting for one to become available before some tank or enemy chopper comes in to take it out. There was enough guys camped out as it was waiting for the gunners position, rather than to fly the thing.
So my novel strategy was to camp out at the enemy base and wait for their chopper to become available, so that if I crashed it , oh well.
It certainly adds to the fun of playing the game.

Hopefully this thread isn’t considered too zombie-ish.
I’ve been playing this a lot recently. Coming from MW2, I find BC2 to be far superior in every aspect of online multiplayer. The class system and upgrades are really good. The maps and modes are fun. And the vehicles are a blast to play with and against.
When your squad works as a team, the game is fantastic. When your squad consists of a bunch of Recon wimps who refuse to get in the action, it sucks.
I play on the PS3 (mske10). Any volunteers for sqauding up with this old guy - especially if you can fly the helo (I can’t).
