This was a pretty rah-rah patriotic film.
So why did they end the movie with Fortunate Son, by CCR?

Struck me as odd, too, but I guess “Some folks were born, made to wave the flag / Oh, the red white and blue…” sounds patriotic as long as you have no follow-up questions whatsoever.
So, when the Navy defeats the aliens in this movie, do they immediately ask for “Best two out of three”? Will there be sequels entitled Clue, Electric Football, and Twister?
I pointed out to the boyfriend how some of the mines the aliens shoot at the ships look like the pegs from the game.
It was a damn fine movie. It was how God intended movies to be. Fast paced, fun, not serious and with a satisfying resolution. I went in with zero expectation and was…surprised. And the shots of the really cool Destroyers and battleships did not hurt. I also discovered why Andy Roddick has won only one grandslam.
The US army Lt Col in the movie struck me as being a bit too rotund to for an active duty officer although evidently the actor is an actual anputee vet
While we have it
One of the turrets of the Missouri was destroyed. Does not turret penetration mean the ship is doomed as the explosion will likely reach the magazines
They made Clueback in the 80’s. It’s was pretty good.
It was a pretty decent summer movie. Just turn your brain off at the door. One touch I did like is that the aliens main weapon was basically shooting pegs at the human ships. Pegs that were the exact same shape as the ones from the game, and they all landed little pointy side into the ships before exploding. I thought that was a nice little touch.
I had the same issue with the Silver Surfer movie. Galactic entity intent on consuming worlds? Sure. Planetary level explosion moving faster than c? What gives?
Cool. That opens the door for a Thanksgiving weekend opening of Battleship Saves Christmas.
You say this but a post up above said Rihanna didn’t appear in a bikini. My deeply held religious belief is that God meant Rihanna to be half-naked.
Well…
… there weren’t any magazines, the armament was bare minimum - in fact one of the plot holes was how long-decommissioned Missouri had any armament at all, but I’m willing to wink and nod on that. Plus it kinda reminded me of the first episode of the rebooted BSG.
Get off my lawn!
Missouri’s sister ship Iowa suffered a turret explosion in 1989, and she survived. Probably not quite as explodey as in the film, but it does suggest that the magazines are protected in this scenario
Didn’t they learn about that at
the battle of Jutland?
“There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today”. The mention of Battleship’s box-office take in the US is interesting, because it’s being spun as a big hit over here - as one of the other posters points out, it was released in the UK several weeks ago, and has made something north of $215m since then internationally. Avengers Assemble also came out first internationally, it seems to be a trend. I assume it’s because we’re so desperate for any old rubbish we’ll queue around the block for, er, any old rubbish.
On a tangent, when did it go from being dapper Navy style to have collars turned up to having collars turned down? The Navy has traditionally been the best-dressed service, by a long chalk - note the jaunty hat angle - and I’m curious to know when the change took place. Upturned collars look a lot older, a kind of version 0.5 of “the look”.
No. From wiki:
“The loading system is fitted with a series of mechanical interlocks that ensure that there is never an open path from the gunhouse to the magazine down which an explosive flash might pass. Flash-tight doors and scuttles open and close to allow the passage between areas of the turret.”
They are not fool-proof, but they work most of the time.
You are half right
FYI: The thread title says “open spoilers”, so the spoiler boxes aren’t all that necessary.
So, does “you sunk my battleship” even get said? And by whom?
So Rihanna isn’t nekkid?
Drat-that takes the movie OFF my list!
Saw it, had a great time at it. Good popcorn flick. Don’t go in expecting too much plot, do go in expecting cool explosions.
