BBC's Sherlock on PBS [OPEN SPOILERS]

I didn’t catch on until the cabbie came up the stairs behind Mrs. Hudson.

I thought he did know. Did I miss something?

I was prepared to hate this, after that Robert Downey POS. In fact, my wife refused to watch it (now she’s sorry). I thought it was excellent, although I had a bit of trouble following Holmes’ logic at times (the accent, you know). When is the next ep?

“You’re a psychopath!”
“No, I’m a high-functioning sociopath; read the definitions.”

Ooh, I’m glad it’s airing. My husband and I just watched the whole thing, downloaded, and loved it. Now there will be more conversation to join in!

I love the conversation when Watson and Holmes are both trying to decide if the other one’s gay.

I got caught by the Mycroft/Sherlock twist, too.
“Your deodorant. It’s for men.”

I watched it on BBC iPlayer (as I do everything BBC these days) I kept ‘rewinding’ (if moving the slider back counts as rewinding  ) partly due to the pace - I don’t want to miss anything while my brain processes what just happened.

I love this miniseries. Apparently a 4th was made, but has never aired (I heard it was shown to test audiences)

I’ve always liked Martin Freeman, and liked every single thing he’s done that I’ve seen. I never saw that Cumberwhatsit guy before but I already think he’s great. Perfect for the role.

On the subject of Martin, I hear he’s been cast as Bilbo Baggins in the new Hobbit films. I heard PJ always considered him ‘born’ to play it. I think I’m inclined to agree. I think Martin has the right face and personality to be Bilbo.

There is a 1 hour pilot that has never been broadcast. It’s on the DVD. Apparently the BBC were minded to go for a one hour episode times 13 format, but decided to reshoot it as the 90 minute episode one and go for a three part mini-series format. I assume this was partly to allow Steven Moffatt some time off. I wonder how they’ll fit in the next Sherlock episodes alongside Doctor Who, with the added complication of Martin Freeman going off to The Hobbit at some point.

He quickly figured it out when he thought about it. I don’t think he considered it important until Lestrade asked him about it.

I usually stay out of the Cafe, but I came specifically to see if there was a “Sherlock” thread, and to start one if not.

Loved that Watson and Holmes keep getting mistaken for a queer couple, though I would expect Holmes to have worked out that Watson is straight without the need for the exchange in the Chinese cafe…he is Holmes after all. Maybe he was having self doubts after missing that Harry was Watson’s sister.

Was there ever an explanation as to how Holmes knew/suspected Watson’s limp was psychosomatic, and beyond that how he knew Watson’s therapist thought so as well? It may have been in the “Terminator” style text cues. I didn’t realize they were doing this until Holmes was examining the lady in pink. I tend to read and listen to the telly at the same time, so I’ll have to make a point of not doing so when watching these.

I think Holmes saw Watson forget to limp when he got interested in something.

Edited to add, since he had a psychosomatic limp, he must have a therapist, who would have mentioned it was psychosomatic.

I was a little confused why the cab driver took the pink suitcase with him in the first place. Did he just want a souvenir?

It was accidental. He didn’t realize she’d left the suitcase in the cab until after she was dead, and so he threw it in a skip, where Sherlock found it.

What’s a skip?

British slang for what an American would call a Dumpster (although that’s a trademark).

Not really. A skip is not the same thing as a large bin (our equivalent of a dumpster)

A skip is a very large open container that is rented when people are doing work on their house, or simply having a large clear out. Skips are usually yellow.

Edit: Wiki does refer to it as the equivalent of a dumpster…

The point is it’s not quite the same thing as a dumpster in that it is not really meant for permanent day-to-day rubbish disposal, more for one-off jobs.

My experience in the US is that we use Dumpster both for the thing that an office or retail store uses for day-to-day trash disposal and the thing that’s used for collecting construction debris. Although Dumpster is a trademark and we should probably use something more generic.

Loved it to death. Cumberbatch nails the manic energy of Holmes perhaps as well as Brett did. Also, they’re about as young a Holmes and Watson as we’ve ever seen, aren’t they? When the RDJr thing was being discussed, someone pointed out that Holmes and Watson were fairly young men when they started their partnership in Scarlet; Watson is a military man, after all, and discharged early due to injury, and there was some other hint that Holmes was young as well.

Favorite line, perhaps–"…Anderson, face the other way, you’re putting me off." “What, my face is?”

People do commonly use “dumpster” generically, but it’s not unheard of to call them waste receptacles, waste bins, or waste containers.

I’m curious about the etymological origin of “skip.”

I can’t pretend I actually knew this, but:

seems likely.

IMHO, if somebody is so hyperaware of their surroundings that they can deduce levels of physical activity based on the scruff marks of a barely-seen cell phone, that person is on the teetering edge of insanity… how does one function like that?

With copious dosages of narcotics.

I think Holmes said something about Watson not taking a chair that was available. A person with a painful/gimpy leg would normally sit down to ease the leg. Ergo, it must be a psychsomatic problem and therefore he has a therapist.
