Moriarity never said the games had all been about “distracting” Holmes from the Bruce-Partington Plans, Holmes said that. Apparently he was wrong. It was about the game, and ultimately getting Holmes into that final scene.
I actually liked the final scene.
Having Holmes and Moriarty near a body of water, with Holmes ready to end Moriarty at the cost of his own like - shades of Reichenbach Falls and “The Final Problem” there.
ETA: I also quite liked Moriarty’s response to Holmes’ remark that people had died: “THAT’S WHAT PEOPLE DO!” Just what Holmes had said earlier - the difference being that Moriarty truly believes it.
I watched the third episode last night. Holy crap, somebody snuck into my brain, stole a wet dream, and put it on TV. This is what I get for reading Sherlock Holmes heavily during my early pubescence.
I guess my free time is pretty much spoken for…
BTW, Brit dopers - am I right that there is no way in hell that a private citizen like Watson could have a handgun?
He would definitely have to have a license for it, I think.
The last time I looked at British law, you are correct. I assume he smuggled it back from Afghanistan. I didn’t look too close, but it might be a Sig Sauer P226, which is the standard British Military Sidearm.
Judging by episode one, it’s a pretty good one whatever it is.
Was that Watson’s gun that Sherlock was shooting off at the start of the episode?
Anyway, all those shots and nobody called the police???
Wait, what?
A bored Holmes fired at least a half dozen shots at the wall of their sitting room. Later on, Mrs. Hudson was peeved at the damage to her wall.
I actually found myself bored with the latest episode, and maybe I drowsed…
Are you saying I dreamed those scenes?
No, you weren’t dreaming, that was the opening scene. I was also rather dubious that Holmes could fire several shots in a crowded residential area without anyone calling the police, but then again, there wouldn’t exactly be any way for the police to pinpoint where the shots had been fired from if they didn’t penetrate to the outside. Also, it wasn’t that long after he fired those shots that the building blew up; for all we know, the cops were already on their way.
I didn’t like the “bored” crap. If you’re so smart that everyday life bores you, then use your big brain to think up something fun to do. That struck me as emo whining bullshit.
Have they stated yet they get out of the cliffhanger? Pure speculation on my part, but I thought there was a look between Holmes and Watson that implied Holmes shoots the bomb and Watson tackles him into the pool.
It’s been a while since I read the stories and novels, but I believe that aspect of Holmes’ personality was taken directly from the original fiction, including shooting holes in the wall of the Baker Street flat. He was bored except when he was occupied with an interesting case.
Echoing Dewey Finn’s comments, yes, that’s correct: the original Holmes got bored when there were no interesting problems, and used cocaine (at least for a while) to escape the humdrum.
One other problem with the finale: Moriarty blows up the blind woman because she starts to describe his voice, implying he wants to remain unknown. And yet, a day or so later, he’s revealing himself fully to Sherlock. Makes Moriarty come across as much more whimsical than logical, changing his mind at the snap of fingers. Come to think of it, he does that during the swimming pool scene, too. Anyhow, it all seems to maek Moriarty less of an intellectual giant and more of a spoiled brat.
But he did think of something fun to do. Note that he said “was” bored.
He did say that he “was” bored didn’t he? I can’t remember for sure now that I’ve jumped in. If not, well, nevermind.
But what he DOES is deductions and solving crime. He has no other hobbies except the violin. He doesn’t do “fun.” That’s the problem.
Watched the third ep today.
Now I’m royally pissed that we have such a long wait for more.
I just finished watching all three of these–how cool that PBS put them all online! I do hope they end up continuing with the series.
I thought the first episode was the best, and the third quite decent. The second was pretty bad, though–the mystical Orient nonsense was a bit nauseating.
The gang/circus is from China, and yet the woman is obsessed with the *Japanese *tea ceremony. I mean, maybe it’s just totally unconnected and that’s just her hobby, totally unrelated to her race, but still.Plus, my boyfriend broke up with me after we watched this episode, so it must have been pretty bad.:o
However, despite the obvious plot-holes that everyone else has pointed out, I still loved the show as a whole. Excellent casting all around and Watson and Holmes have great chemistry. Plus, I have to admit, I’m a sucker for all the gay jokes.
