The MBTA map is messy, so I’ll ask for help here. Anyway, which stop is considered the halfway mark between MIT and the MFA? Is it a residential or commercial district? (I rarely venture into the city, and then only by RIDE vehicle).
Well, they’re on different lines. MIT is on the Red line. The MFA is on the Green line. But, the biggest problem may be that most of the Green line stops are not wheelchair accessible. If I recall correctly, you asked us to make sure the next Dopefest was accessible.
Technically, Copley would be the mid-point, but it’s not accessible. Park St Station is, as are both MIT and Museum stations. Park St is a mixed commercial/residential area, as is Copley. But, why do you ask?
You are talking about locations that are on two different subway lines. On the red line, which runs from Quincy, through Boston and out through cambridge, mit sits between the Kendall Sq and Central Sq stops. MFA is on the green line (Huntington Ave E train).
The junction of Red Line and Green Line is Park Street Station. It is a Commercial area (Boston Gardens, State House, Downtown Shopping). From an MBTA perspective this is the halfway mark.
However, he intersection of Mass ave (Which MIT is on) and Huntington Ave is only a half mile or so from MIT and the MFA is only about 6 Blocks further. That neighborhood is mixed Residential/Commercial. Symphony Hall is right there.
There might be a bus. Take a peek at a road map to get a better idea of where things lie. Either way you’ll get from one place to the other.
Jinx on you. You owe me a Coke.
This was not a Dopefest related query, and not for somethin important, but thanks for the info.
MBTA map messy? Hard to understand.
The region between MIT and the MFA is mostly student-inhabited and young professional, along with the businesses that cater to them. I’m not sure what you’d consider “halfway”, but if you take the Red line in to Park Street and change to the Green Line there, you’d probably hit the halfway distance in Back Bay somewhere.
The distance is shiort enough that you could easily walk, if you wanted. It’s a quick bicycle trip.
I hate this thread. It makes me miss living in Boston, coincidentally about halfway between MIT and the MFA.
Cal-on a regular map, it IS VERY close, so ITA w/you about that. Ino-Sorry to depress ya
The #47 Bus runs from Central Square - up the road from MIT - to past the MFA on its way to Dudley.
Sorry you have to use The Ride. I’ve heard that the service isn’t very good.
Depends on the vendor. My Ride is pretty good,
That’s good to hear.
I’ll also recommend (again) the book Car-Free in Boston. After a long wait, there is finally a new edition, published by Rubel BikeMaps and still afilliated with the Association for Public Transportation, Inc. Transit information (bus, train, commuter rail, private transit companies), maps of various neighborhoods and towns, directions to local attractions – it’s a valuable tool.
