Bearded Dragon babies!

Caution: Overly excited beardie owner raving ahead

Well, okay, I’m jumping the gun a little. There’s just eggs so far. I suppose I should have waited until I uploaded photos of my beardies and the eggs, but I was too impatient and had to share.

I was planning to breed my beardie pair (Fred and Ethel) later this summer after we’d returned from a week-long vacation but apparently, they had other plans. Ethel went into her little sleeping log yesterday afternoon and started scratching around, which isn’t unusual for her. What was unusual was that Fred was hovering around the outside of the log looking quite worried for a lizard. I went over to see what was going on and found 19 eggs in there with her. 19! We had no idea she was pregnant as she is rather well-fed in the first place and it was impossible to tell.

I candled them to make sure they’re fertile and then rigged up a makeshift incubator and with any luck in about 60 days or so, I should be the proud owner of several baby beardies.

Whooohoo! (Cute photos to follow soon).

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! You owe me pics! I’m holding you to it…

I miss my beardies :frowning:

I want pics of the eggies and babies!!

Not knowing what on earth you were talking about, I googled and discovered that

“When first born baby bearded dragons are just under 4 inches in length and weigh about 1/10 of an ounce”

It doesn’t give the gestation period, though. (Incubation period?) Anyway, let’s see the eggs!

I miss my beardie, Leviathan. I raised him from about 3 weeks old, only to die when he got a cold from some idiot leaving a window open in the middle of winter.

Pics!!! I wanna see pics!!!

Pics coming soon!

Ellen Cherry, the incubation period is around 60 days, give or take a week or so. The timing depends a lot on the temperature inside the incubator. And yep, they are incredibly tiny when born. But, despite their size they eat an enormous amount of food. I’ve been told I should expect to buy probably 1000 crickets every two weeks or so. Plus, they eat every 4 hours so it’s gonna be like having 19 very tiny, very hungry, very scaley newborns to care for. After reading that about the crickets, my husband said “Oh God, what have we done?” Heh.

Sorry to hear about your beardie, XWalrus2. I’ve only had my bearded dragons for 6 months and as attached as I am to them already, I can’t imagine how attached you were to your beardie raised from a baby.

Greywolf, maybe next time you should make them lay off the fertility drugs, eh?

Where are the pics? heh

My cute beardie story. We were driving back from Toronto to Ottawa after picking our 1st beardie up and I decided to take him out of the container we had him in. I held him for a minute, then he ran up my arm (I was the passenger) He ran on to my chest, flopped down, did a little nuzzle to find a comfy spot and slept like that for about 2 hours!

Maybe he’s hungry for an omelette.
