Beastie Boys

The humor is cruder and the sound is different, since there’s more rap plus metal and not much of the funk and jazz and stuff, but it’s got raw power in spades. There are a couple of things on there that are not to be missed: that crazy beginning with Rhymin’ and Stealin’ (the drums from When the Levee Breaks, the guitar from Sweet Leaf, and a pirate rap) Paul Revere, and all the samples at the end of the album.

I love that video so very, very much.

Yeah, the fact that they wanted to call that album Don’t be a Faggot gives you an idea of their mindset at the time.

Just popped in to say the Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence freaking rock. They always have, and they always will.

Yeah, it was Murphy’s Law that opened for them on that tour. I think Onyx did also. It was a crazy good show that I saw.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to show off a bit too. Most fans know the song Alive. About 10 years ago, Sonic Foundry (makers of the ACID music software, since purchased by Sony) had a remix contest. At the time I owned Licensed To Ill and Check Your Head, but not Paul’s Boutique. I hadn’t ever heard the song when I saw the contest, but that didn’t stop me from entering two songs.

Alive (BoarderBattleMix)
Alive (BatterReMix)

I listened to lots of other people’s remixes, but it was still a couple of years before I /facepalm and finally find it online to hear the original. And frankly, I still like both of my versions better than theirs.

Also wanted to mention that when I got my first CD player, I bought 2 CDs: Combat Rock by the Clash & Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys.

I don’t like your attitude, boy.

You’re not getting away with this. This is one of the crazier posts I’ve seen in a while.

I liked them the first time I heard them, saw them in concert, and I think really do not like much hip-hop at all. I think I like BB because they make it clear that they are just having so much damn fun all the time. They don’t seem to take themselves too seriously, they’re almost meta in their lyrics and songs and presentation, and they’re a fun fun group.

What has Rick Rubin’s level of involvement been in their success? How has this changed over time?

I’ve read that Rubin got them to move to hip hop from punk. They haven’t worked with him since they split from Def Jam after their first album. I don’t know the background on that but they felt ripped off by Rubin and especially by Russell Simmons. It comes up in passing on Paul’s Boutique ("I smoked up a bag of elephant tranquilizer/Because I had to deal with a money hungry miser "), and much later on Ill Communication (“got fat basslines like Russell Simmons steals money”). So I’m guessing there is not a lot of contact there.

When my wife and I were on vacation in Seattle, we went to the planetarium and looked at the list of laser shows. We THOUGHT that it was ‘Smashing Pumpkins’ day, which I would have stomached since the wife liked them, but me not so much. However, because we got the days mixed up, it turned out to be ‘Beastie Boys’ day which made for a fun hour of chilling.

I don’t have much else to add to the music that hasn’t already been said beyond that I love them. Oh, and Spike Jonze, the Where the Wild Things Are guy created the Sabotage, not to mention the awesome Buddy Holly video from Weezer, the Weapon of Choice video by Fatboy Slim, and the very cool Y Control video by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but those are best saved for another thread.

I’m not saying I don’t like it, just that I can appreciate why others might think it is one of their weaker offerings.

Jeez, some defensive Beastie fans around here!

Bumping this bad beastie motherfucker because I just saw the trailer for the 30-minute short film to be distributed with the upcoming Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.

It stars Will Ferrel, Jack Black and John C. Reilly as the Beastie Boys bringing a super-fresh, old-school throw-down dance contest FROM THE FUTURE!

The YouTube clip stars a crapload of other people, too. You can see the Beasties make a cameo as the cops. And the characters in the full movie include Johnny Ryall, Nathaniel Hornblower and Sir Stewart Wallace, which is a fun thing to scrutinize for people who are into that kind of thing. I’m excited for the whole movie. I preordered the album the other day, so for now I’m listening to the remix of Make Some Noise (the original, heard in the trailer, sound better), and I’m trying to hold out a few weeks for the full album.

Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. I’m on that, just pre-ordered it.

They look like they get the joke.

New song released by the Beasties today. Sounds kind of like the early/mid 90’s stuff. I dig it.

Did anyone see Fight For Your Right Revisited?

Elijah Wood, Seth Rogan, Danny McBride, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, it just goes on and on. Seriously, check out all the actors in this

good song. terrible compressed-all-to-shit sound quality tho.

Love the outtro. Cool song, thanks for posting it!

Yesterday morning it sounds like they streamed the whole album. You can listen to the whole thing at their website now.
