Beastie Boys

Well here it is in all it’s glory!

I’m confused here. I preordered the thing a while ago. I’ll have to see if I can just download it now.

It always freaks me out when I realize they’re grown ups now. Heh, but I bet they are cool as shit to have for dads.

Part of the Beasties appeal to me is that they didn’t clear any of the samples used on Paul’s Boutique, none of them. They were sued to hell and back over it, but it pioneered the careers of the Dust Brothers (of Fight Club fame and more) who produced the album and it had the interesting after effect of having the Beasties lose their record contract, which forced them to start their own record label Grand Royal. Of course being bitter over losing most of the money made from one of the best hip hop albums of all time lead them to start writing all their own music which then gave us the increadible Check Your Head and it just kept going from there. That work ethic and ability to grow and change everything is the mark of increadible art.

Edit - They’re also notable for allowing the DJ’s and producers lots of leeway in throwing flavor into what they’re doing with the use of vocal effects and such. The “Beastie Boys” has always been more of a collaborative effort between the three members and their ever growing circle of DJs, musicians and producers which is stunningly rare in hip hop.

The answer to my question was no, by the way. They said the album has been leaked and you can stream it from their site, but they haven’t released it for sale. What I heard did sound more like Check Your Head than anything else, especially with those fuzzed-out vocals. Say It definitely made me think of So Whatcha Want - although it feels even more like Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun from Paul’s Boutique.

I never knew that was how it played out. I did know they left Def Jam on bad terms and have always said they got jobbed by Russell Simmons. And speaking of the old days, the full “Fight For Your Right Revisited movie” is now online. Elijah Wood makes a really good Ad Rock for some reason. And for that matter I kind of like Seth Rogen as Mike D even though their voices could not match any less.

Not only that, but the additonal after affect lead to court rulings on how and when samples can be used and the Beasties rather punk attitude towards taking what they liked and wanted to hear is, to me, a direct parent of the entire mash up genre that gives us artists like Girl Talk and 2ManyDJs who also use the whole of what they want without permission but since it’s distributed for free it’s impossible to sue them over it. The Beastie Boys are really their own trunk of the music tree.

paul’s boutique was their best album. very original for rap

Well, they had left Def Jam previous to Paul’s Boutique, the rumor was that Def Jam wanted Ad-rock to be a solo act. Plus financial chicanery.

Paul’s Boutique was released by Capitol records, it was the only album that the Beasties did for Capitol because it sold poorly at first in comparison to LTI and then the lawsuits came in.

I wish that they’d release Paul’s Boutique as an instrumental album.

PB is the only album I’ve ever owned that was better than the first I’ve ever owned by an artist. I like L2I but PB just blows it away and has yet to be equalled in hip hop.
