Beatles - Totally Cool! The Hard Day's Night Chord - Unravelled!

Check this out!

The one-chord intro blast at the start of A Hard Day’s Night is legendary - I know we’ve picked it apart on the Dope before in a thread or two. Folks have decomposed it and called out the amalgam of notes being played and the underlying bass tones…but they didn’t have the source tapes.

That link is to an interview with Randy Bachman - of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turnder Overdrive (you may not know that he is a top flight musician, passionate guitar collector and really knowledgeable about music, too), where he got to pick apart the master tapes under producer George Martin’s son Giles’ supervision.

When it all comes together it is SO freakin’ cool. If ya care about stuff like that…which I totally do! ;)

What I absolutely love is the 14 year old boyish enthusiasm with which Randy describes that whole process!!!

Cool vid, thanks.

I think that proves there wasn’t a piano involved.

In case you didn’t see it, there’s recent discussion here of that chord.

ETA: Obviously, you’ve seen that thread, having participated in it, but it’s been recently updated, and I don’t know if you caught the last few posts, or if you were breaking off that discussion into another thread.

Argh - thanks pulykamell - I hadn’t seen those updated posts.

Randy Bachman has a great weekly radio show on the CBC, called Vinyl Tracks. Usually worth listening to.
