Beckdawrek and the ersatz elemental refrigerator

We had that problem with our GE fridge (the one that was installed new in the house, and lasted us 20+ years). The problem is so well known that they had instructions on how to fix it on their web page - pull out the bottom drawers, see a sheet of ice completely covering the bottom (including a small drainhole). We had to pour hot water on that until it melted enough for water to start to drain. Then shoot hot water + baking soda (seriously) through the hole with a turkey baster. It recommended we do the turkey-baster step annually. Maybe for that same ā€œopen the nippleā€ step another poster described.

IIRC, the design is that water dripping down from the defrost cycle is supposed to drip through that hole into some kind of pan, where it evaporates.

I do rather miss that fridge. It died just before Christmas that year. I decided I wanted one of the french door fridges - and we lucked into a Samsung at a local Habitat ReStore - for about 1/3 of retail. We think it was donated either because of a very small dent in the front, or maybe because of the icemaker problems (known problem with these). We ultimately got Samsung to replace the icemaker (a sort of hidden warranty) and it works… except when one of your spirit elementals decides to tell the icemaker to completely stop. Simply unplugging and replugging the whole fridge solves that. Then perhaps it flies out to your fridge…

Hey, I know the very one you’re describing. I looked at that when I was looking for a smallish fridge for my office space at home. It looked really cute. But I wound up going with a Magic Chef stainless-look model because of the reviews (though if I’d seen the red one on scratch-and-dent sale, you and I might have become fridge buddies!).

As far as ā€œin the bathroomā€: IIRC you’re insulin-dependent, right? Depending on where you do most of your shooting-up, that actually makes complete sense!

See? You understand me.

Yep on the insulin storage and snacks for just me.(not that anyone wants them)

And…Red. I rest my case.

Those narrow fridges are the size I’ve seen frequently in England. So I suspect that the brand was selling them to a European market before they realized that Americans were interested due to the colors. I find them funky and a bit frustrating if you are trying to make a platter for a party ahead of the event. But a fridge is a fridge. They work (or not) the same way.

I’d like a blue one.

It’s fun. I love it.

My Aunt had an old old fridge with the rounded corners and a weird freezer in the top that stayed frosted over. We loved scraping that ice for her on defrost days.

Hers was a weird teal blue color.

True enough. We will put pre-Thanksgiving foods in mine, to make room in the main fridge. It will NOT hold anything especially large or wide. But it’s better than not having an overflow fridge at all!

Mine mostly holds drinks and a few refrigeratable snacks. My husband said ā€œif there was a bathroom in your office we’d never see you again!ā€. I pointed out that I could knock a hole in the back of the closet, to access the kids’ bathroom. He kinda said ā€œuh-ohā€ and stopped coming up with ideas.

I have a small fridge in the basement for extra milk, cold drinks, spare chocolate, etc. It has worked just fine for 18 years as our main fridge, and another 30 years as our spare fridge. No automatic defrost, so I have to turn it off once or twice a year to melt the accumulated ice in the freezer section, but otherwise no problems.

Absolutely. I grew up with an overflow fridge, mainly used for beer and pop. And two overflow freezers. As an adult, I had to adjust. Right now, I have a standard cheapo fridge in my apartment along with a very small chest freezer. I miss the large fridge that I had to give up. Luckily, I don’t prepare platters like I used to. But I have been considering making and selling xmas cookies for some extra income. Doing so is probably against the apartment regs however. But I’m going to look into it.

We have the same. It’s not a brand name, I can’t recall what brand it is. It was the office fridge (where I work) for about 15 years. When we moved to a different office space there was nowhere for it to go so I raised my hand and said I’ll take it. It’s been our basement overflow fridge for at least 10 years. It has one of those crummy inside freezers that I never use, but it’s great for pop, extra milk, extra everything. It’s really handy when we have Thanksgiving or other get togethers. I’d be lost without it.
