I have a Maytag Neptune frontloader in boring white. It’s of a respectable age and holding up nicely.
If ut dies in the next week, I expect every single Doper to make a generous donation to my GoFundMe page.
The door latch is a squared-off “U” shaped loop protruding from the inner door. PERFECT for holding a hanger to keep the door from closing tightly. Funny thing: when we have the house winterized by a guy we know, he ALWAYS takes the hanger off the loop and closes the washer door securely.

Everything seemed normal last night. I was awakened bright and early, (Cats don’t adhere to daylight savings time) By howling Siamese wanting theor breakfast. I tried to wait them out for a few minutes. In an effort to train them into a later feeding time. Nah, ain’t working. At. All.
Stepped out my bedroom. Something’s allover the floor. Looks like dirt. But white. I flipped the light on. When my assaulted eyes adjusted I see beany baby guts. OM freakin’ God! How did these 2 cats find a beany baby?
Lil’wrekker had many beany babies. I was sure they were all in a box. One errant beany baby got murdered.
I’ll clean up the crime scene later. I go down, feed the cats. Stumble back to bed.
When we were getting stuff for the rental cottage, I advocated getting the Amana W/D pair on sale at Home Depot for $325 each. Brother said, “Oh, no. Let’s get some Kenmores,” for more than twice as much (no extended warranty). Three years later the dryer is still going good but last the washer wouldn’t unlock at the end of its cycle. The renter “had a cousin” who would sell a used washer for $100. Since that was less than a service call, the deed was done – a crowbar on the old washer aided in retrieving the last load. The price had inflated to $120 but it’s all coming out of bro’s end, anyway.
Meantime the Amanas I got for myself are still going strong. To be fair, the renters are three Hispanic yard workers and undoubtedly were putting their washer to more use than we have been.
^^My friend had an Amana washer that was 20+ years old. She said. It even had rusty spots all over the outside. She bought some Rustoelum paint and painted it. She said that killed it :smack:
IKR? Appliance covers in general are very much a thing in Europe. But this particular one Went Too Far and became a viral source of contempt a while back. I think I heard about it on some BBC quiz show.
It must have been quite some time ago because the only photo I could find was from an American radio station. I refuse to read far enough to find why the heck they had it up on their website. Not sure whether I’m more afraid that it would make sense or it wouldn’t, but I am sure that I don’t wish to know.
Some years back, we had a repair guy look at the (avocado) dryer that the sellers left with this house - it was pretty dead. I was talking to him about replacements and I’d mentioned Maytag. He advised against them. He said they used to be great, but more recently, they’d started using plastic parts that wore out fast and caused problems.
So I replaced the dryer with a Kenmore. It didn’t last very long - maybe 5 years? I’m quite happy with my Whirlpool, and it gets quite the workout with a baby in the house.
