Bed & breakfast decor in the US: why the prevalence of Victorian/granny decor?

AFAIK, bed, yes; breakfast, no. The Louis Penfield House in Willoughby, Ohio, has a two-night minimum at $275 a night. Looking at the floor plan, it appears to sleep five, and you can cook your own breakfast. http://www.penfieldhouse.com/

Don’t forget the mandatory one time only $50 fee to register you<?>

I have never really liked most of his houses, the seriously disproportional built in furniture sucks. You can tell he designed it to be architectural, not ergonomic.

And he designed it to fit HIMSELF, not his clients. I think he also made contracts that said the furniture had to stay, so even if your bed gave you back spasms, too bad for you.

I’d think such a contract would be pretty hard to enforce. Or even hold up in court.

He certainly designed them for rich people.
The ones I’ve seen seem to need a full-time maid or two to clean them. And they seem very lacking in storage – minimal closets, etc.

The weird thing about Victorian decor-its ugly as hell, and impossible to keep clean (velvet curtains, deep carpets, huge windows). And knickknacks-everywhere-with doilies underneath. No wonder they had armies of maids back then. And Victorian furniture is uncomfortable and ugly. Just like the exteriors-band sawed shingles, turrets and towers…painted in 4 colors. These houses must cost a fortune to keep up.
Modern styled houses are a lot easier to maintain.

Wasn’t it because you were all debtors and felons?
