There’s a Welsh Bitter Ale that I really enjoy: Felinfoel’s Double Dragon. Sadly, there are only two pubs here in St. Louis that I know of that sell it, and they don’t have take out, if ya know what I mean.
I’d really like to either find a place that sells it, or a bitter ale that is comparable in taste/flavor. With it being an import, I haven’t had any luck finding it anywhere, so I figured I’d post the question to the teemings, and see if anyone can come up with either a importer that sells it, or even a good replacement that’s easier to obtain here in the states.
So in your opinion, for those who’ve tried it, what are some other bitter ales that are comparable?
A good ESB (Extra Special Bitter) that you might enjoy is Fuller’s ESB. It’s a rather large brand, so any good beer bar should carry it, at least in bottles.
I’ll be damned…good beer in St. Louis…who’d a thunk it?
Don’t know how it compares to other bitters, but I’ve enjoyed Foster’s Bitter. A few years ago, a local Outback Steakhouse had it (in the “oilcan”), but unfortunately they stopped carrying it. I would think there’s a reasonable chance you can find it. Be warned that you usually need to specify three times that you want Foster’s Bitter before people understand that Foster’s actually makes something besides their ubiquitous lager.
Oh yeah – come fall, see if you can find Boulevard (from Kansas City) Bob’s 47 Lager. While not a bitter, it’s got more flavor and character – by a long shot – than any other lager I’ve tried. I suspect you may like it. If so, stock up – it’s a seasonal brew, only available for a couple months each year.
I’ve not had Felinfoel’s Double Dragon. But Red Hook ESB is a pretty good micro. It has a distribution deal (as well as part-ownership) with A-B, so it’s available in many cities.
