<< IANAM or Admin. but it’s been my observation that being banned is usually a last-resort step taken for egregious and repeated violation of the rules established for use of this board, after warnings of how and why one has violated them. >>
Generally speaking, that’s true. Usually, if someone has inadvertent misbehavior, we give them a warning (or two) and a chance to show that they know better. And we usually discuss amongst ourselves whether banning is the appropriate remedy, or whether someone should be given “yet another chance.”
It’s rare that a banning is for a single offense, at least among folks who have posted. We do get the occasional one-time poster who comes here to drop an advertisement or a porn link, and we don’t waste time with a warning – that’s not a person interested in being a “regular” anyhow.
It’s thus not always easy for you to see all the activity that led to a banning. Some offenses get hidden, so you don’t even see the offense.
And I’ll also echo dork’s comments, that we do respect the privacy of members, so the reasons for a banning may not always be apparent to an outside observer.
I’ll just like to say when I read dorkusmalorkusmafia’s first post in this thread, I read it as having the meaning given in the above message. It sertainly read to me as “Remember you don’t get to see all that goes on between Moderators and Posters, so don’t assume you can judge a Moderator by what you see on the boards themselves when it comes to a banning”
Cheers, Bippy
Messing with the Straight Dope server will get you banned REAL quick like, too. No second chances.
And as Dex said above, spammers usually get banned after the first offense. USUALLY they’re content to drop their…load…into just one forum, but we do get some that like to post in each forum. The first mod/admin to find these little gems usually checks to see that all of them are swept away, no matter which forum(s) they’re in. That’s one of the features I like about this system, all mods can moderate in all forums, if necessary.
Kigali?well the usual, ritual sacrifices, deranged monkeys everywhere, and bullets every 5 minutes…well, not really. Its hot, noisy and very peaceful. I love this place. Its not Somalia but it definetly aint New York here…

Was that not the case with the old system? That must have sucked.

Nope. I can speak from experience on this one, having been a Mod. and then Admin. on a different board using the same software. Under UBB (which we used to use here) and I think vBB 1.0 you were a moderator with powers in your own forum only, and if you saw trouble brewing in another forum, you had to depend on the moderator of that forum or an administrator to take necessary action. It was, to say the least, rather frustrating.
Are you from Rwanda originally? If not, why are you there? How widespread is net access in Kigali? What do Rwandans think about Mugabe? Have you been to see the gorillas? What sort of temperature is it at the moment?
yeah i am Rwandese through and through and i hate Mugabe with a passion as do most Rwandese. NEt acceess is only widespread in the capital but otherwise it aint in abundance. I havent seen the gorillas but i will soon,i hear it is quite an experience.
weather? hot,hot,hot.
