Was I the only one at this phenomenal concert? Those guys can play. I know there are tons of Bela Fleck appreciation threads, but I just had rave about the show. I was never a big fan… by that I mean that I never really knew any of their songs, but I’d seen them before and they blew me away. So my girlfriend bought me some tickets for my birthday, and I got first row seats. Absolutely amazing. Sooooo amazing. Victor Wooten’s rendition of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” was the greatest version I’ve heard. Bela Fleck playing the Beatle’s on his unplugged banjo… so great. I sat next to a woman taping the show. Hopefully in a couple of days it’ll be up. So in summary: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones put on one of the greatest shows in rock/jazz/insert genre here. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Yeah, thosa guys are good. The first time I heard of “Banjo Jazz,” I thought they were a joke.
To really appreciate the Flektones, you have to see them live.
Agree with NoClueBoy. Live is best. Seeing is believing.
Have seen a couple summer Flecktones concerts here at the Denver Botanic Gardens, a very pleasant setting indeed.
Was Future Man playing? I heard he had tax trouble awhile back.
Future Man was definitely on stage, playing his (is it entirely home made?) synth guitar drum ax, or whatever Bela called it. Last time I saw them, which was about 6 years ago, I swear I don’t remember him playing real drums as well as his synth stuff. Is this a “new addition?” It definitely made his solos more visually dynamic. The onstage banter was great too. Last time, I was way too far away to hear anything they were saying to each other, but this time I was afraid of whispering to my girlfriend in fear of interrupting their concentration.
Does anyone know the significance of the stuffed red hippos?
Oooh - they’re coming to West Lafayette before too long. I’d never heard of them. Now I’ll try to go.
The onstage banter is the best. The band really seems to like and respect one another.
Capri, I really can’t recommend strongly enough that you go. Be warned, there is about 1 song that they’ll sing, and the rest is instrumental. But it’s phenomenal instrumental. Lyrics really would just get in the way for the most part. They’re extremely playful in their solos as well as in their little comments to each other which shows that they’re having a blast playing. Good, good show.
It’s from the cover art on their second album, “Flight of the Cosmic Hippo.”
