Bernie Sanders' White Privilege

“This site can’t be reached … error connection refused”

Regardless … say there’s a picture of what you say. Where’s the proof that she didn’t face criticism or consequences? Did you ask her? Did you ask the people who saw her whether they would criticize her for it?

Have we reached the silly “prove a negative” portion of this inanity already?

You are asking him to prove a negative. That can’t be done. If you think she received criticism, it’s up to you to find it.

And the picture shows up fine in the thread for me. No need to go to another site. I can affirm it shows what Eyebrows says it does.

Privilege is already proven. Privilege in clothing is already proven. Such explicit evidence is rarely on the record, and you’re asking for it, not only in narrowed circumstances, but in a specific case. What you’re asking is just as unreasonable as my asking you to prove a negative.

The failure to meet such a standard of proof demonstrates nothing for the matter of discussion.

And let’s be clear: this is exactly what people do who are denying the existence of institutional privilege, or institutional racism … you can’t show me explicit proof in this exact case or in this exact circumstance that race played a factor; therefore, it’s ridiculous fo ryou to even bring up the possibility that race played a factor.

Sorry, no. Demanding proof that by it’s nature is difficult or impossible to find doesn’t demonstrate anythiing.

I missed that. But I have to say that reading this thread makes me kind of tired. There are so many real, horrible, examples of how white men use their status to do real horrible things and get away with it. Must we pick on Bernie?

Maybe. But this is also what people do when being told that a squirrel is actually a zebra and prove to me that it’s not a zebra and if you weren’t such an institutional speciest you’d agree that it was a zebra. I mean, sometimes you agree that zebras are a thing but this here critter just doesn’t qualify.

I’ve posted before about white privilege. I’ve agreed that it exists. I’ve offered my own examples of times I’ve benefited from it. This isn’t it. Harping on this makes a mockery of the concept, in my opinion.

That may be, but you can’t establish that point in these cases by demanding this sort of proof and then declaring victory when no one has it.

Well I don’t necessarily think it’s a picking on Bernie in this thread, but rather an acknowledgement that Bernie can get away with it for those particular reasons. Not that he intentionally did anything wrong.

This is really dumb. You said that no black woman would be able to wear a parka at an inauguration. Eyebrows showed that one did. You responded by asking eyebrows to prove that she didn’t receive any criticism. That’s an impossible request. How would he go about it?

You made a very specific demand, and now you are dodging how impossible that demand is.

It’s not wrong to benefit from privilege. I benefit from tons of privilege. It’s only wrong to deny it, or, most especially, to try to block the underprivileged from having the same opportunities.

It’s more that people that think Bernie-as-grumpy-old-man is adorable should maybe do some soul searching about how his status in society shaped their reaction.

My point is that it’s just as dumb and impossible to demand the proof he is asking in order to show that privilege exists. This isn’t an algebra proof. You can’t just show a picture and say your point has been proven.

I don’t think he’s adorable, myself, although I did enjoy him in his grumpy chair suspended upside down with somehow similar fruit bats.

I think he’s adorable. But I recognize my reaction is shaped by a lot of complex idea about race, gender, and class.

He’s adorable in an “I love my crazy Uncle” kind of way.

True, that.

My reaction to the Cheney case was the same as my reaction to the Sanders case now: He’s an old man and it’s cold out; give him a break.

Which may be the only time anyone has ever said the same thing about Cheney and Sanders.

Nah, you make your best argument and people decide if it has merit or not. Personally, I’ve found little merit in the “white privilege is a factor in Sanders wearing his coat and mittens” argument put forth by column in the OP or other sources. I don’t need to prove you (or them) that it’s not, because I’m not trying to create change using this example. I can shrug and say “Nope” if the argument is lacking. If someone gives a shit about this and wants it to matter, the burden is on them to make it matter. Probably won’t happen in this case because there’s just no “there” there.

Maybe she will if people start crocheting/making a suncatcher of him.

Naah, the real white privilege is assuming everyone in that group is white. I can see several non-white posters here on the “I get what she’s saying” side (that you strawmanned as “getting upset”)
