A weaker list this year than previous, but still a few years off from total crapitude. Not a lot to get excited about, but at least a few you can vote for without feeling guilty.
Had to go with Nirvana again on this one, although Belly was close behind, and I really wanted to put in a vote for the Lemonheads, but I’m not particularly thrilled by that song. I really dig the New Order song, too. Actually, now that I think about it, I’ll put it in the number two slot. “Pets” is pretty cool, as well. Nothing particularly objectionable on this list, but there was a lot better alternative music in '93. Some great albums released that year: Siamese Dream, Exile in Guyville, Debut (Björk), Modern Life is Rubbish, Suede, Pablo Hunny, etc.
Not a great field. I picked Porno for Pyros.
I’m surprised at how I’m not familiar with most of these selections. Went with Nirvana – a middling song of theirs, but still really good music.
What '93 releases was I listening to? Hmm…Lenny Kravitz, Chris Isaak, Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest – and George Clinton’s disc that year (with a little help from his friends) wasn’t at all bad. (Beck and Boxing Gandhis are coming up just in a few short months…)
Blind Melon, RIP Shannon Hoon(1967-1995)
Weird, I know almost all of the bands and none of the songs. No vote.
New Order wins this, clearly.
Other contenders: Lemonheads, the Juliana Hatfield Three, Belly, and Nirvana (good lord, were the Lemonheads so close).
Belly. Tonya Donnelly’s an underappreciated Goddess. And I’ve always taken it as a Larry Niven reference.
Easy choice of New Order for me.
Followed closely by my favorite RHCP song, even if it was from a crappy movie.
I loved Belly too, but thought “Gepetto” and “Slow Dog” were better than “Feed The Tree”. So I went with New Order’s “Regret”.
Gave Nirvana a vote, it’s a good song.
I notice that, checking various charts, a lot of my favorite songs from the era from Stone Template Pilots, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, and others charted in the top ten, but never hit #1. Since I was blissfully unaware of this fact at the time, I’m sure this says something about me, but I’m not sure exactly what…:dubious:
Yeah, “Slow Dog” is my favorite off that album. If that one hit #1, I’d probably have voted for it.
Thanks for the tip – now I just bought this fun song. Belly barely registered on my awareness in the 90s – I think I might have seen them open for R.E.M. during the *Monster *tour.
Depeche Mode’s my all-time favorite, but in a comparison of tracks, I had to go with New Order. I love that track.
Never really got into the band, but dammit as a stoned twenty-something in a house full of other stoned twenty-somethings it was like they made that Bee Girl video just for us. Blind Melon.
I remember buying that album purely based on the cover and seeing them in the alternative section of the record store (remember those? Coconuts, IIRC.) I never really did into the album, though, except for “Tones of Home.” I’d be curious to see if I like the album any more now–my tastes were still in transition at the time, and a lot of stuff that I like from '93 now, I didn’t like then (for example, I really could not stand the Pumpkins, but now they’re perhaps my favorite band from that era.)
No Rain was kind of whiny, and not representative of the band’s style at all. It sure was catchy though, and I loved the video for it.
Seems Blind Melon pulling ahead of Nirvana, battle of the dead frontmen Kurt and Shannon. Shame “All Apologies” was not on this list or I would have given it to Nirvana. First time I’m voting with the majority in the Alternative polls.
