OK, now we’re starting to get into the dark years, with poseurs/bandwagon-jumpers like Silverchair and Bush making their first appearances. There are only 2 songs on this list I’d ever listen to of my own free will (though I’m not really a fan of the band or the sound, “Misery” by Soul Asylum is a good song, though I didn’t vote for it), but at least there’s no Limp Bizkit or Blink-182 yet. Still, the worst year so far for this chart.
“Glycerine” beats out “Lump” by a nose for me, with “When I Come Around” a close third.
Excuse me, are you dissing Silverchair, Aussie rock royalty?
Just kidding, one of the guys from Silverchair was on a really awful reality show and that’s what his wife said every time she got blank looks after mentioning Silverchair.
This whole list is awful. Wonderwall would probably get my vote if it hadn’t been ground into dust by 20 years of unrelenting overexposure. Blech.
ETA: I’ll go with RHCP; not their greatest song but decent enough.
Yeah, I went with “Wonderwall” myself, because I feel like pretty much all these songs have been ground into dust from constant airplay.
Voted for “Wonderwall”, liked several songs here also. Alanis had good
Songs but “You Outta Know” was bad. I disagree that these songs all were played to death, some yes but not all.
I went with Red Hot Chili Peppers, because… I liked the song “My Friends”.
Again, this Playlist Research (who?) list shows the songs that I did like that year, like “Unglued”, “1979”, “Possum Kingdom”, “Plowed” (well, someone had to like Sponge), “Polly”, “Star 69”…and a host of other cool songs that didn’t win…
My four year old loves to belt out “Wonderwall” so that wins.
Ground into dust or not, Wonderwall is still a pretty solid song by my standards. And it pains me to say it because I always hated Bush, but Glycerine is a pretty good song, as well. Inspired by these threads, I listened to 90s Alternative on Pandora yesterday and I really enjoyed that track when it came up.
*You Oughta Know * rocks.
The rest of her output can be forgotten.
Oof. Rough year indeed. Green Day is about the only band I still occasionally listen to on this list (well, maybe Oasis occasionally), so I ended up going with “When You Come Around.” Dookie is simply a classic.
I really like Lightning Crashes, so that got my vote, but once again there are quite a few good choices this year.
Voted for Live because we need more rock songs with the word “placenta” in them. Otherwise it would have been the Peppers or Alanis - I still love One Hand in My Pocket
This is a toss-up between Alanis Morrissette and Oasis.
“Wonderwall” is probably the better song. But I was a college freshman when “You Oughta Know” hit the charts, and I can’t over-emphasize the song’s impact on a lot of young women. So Alanis gets my vote.
After years of crap this year was an embarrassment of riches.
“My Friends” was a very special song for me, resonating emotionally with a transitional time in my life. It’s still my favorite song of theirs, even if the album it’s from is probably their only dud within the long period of great albums from Freakey Styley (1985) up to and including Californication (1999).
My second choice would have been Alanis Morisette’s “You Oughta Know” – featuring RHCP’s Flea on bass.
I went with those snotty Brits, Oasis. It was between them and PUSA.
There was a great song from 95’ called “In The Meantime” by Spacehog. Don’t know how it charted. By the way the U2 is pretty interesting, sexy minus Bono’s slightly disturbing moaning, but I love the synth and orchestra background. U2 we’re pretty weird and experimental in the middle 90’s.
Spacehog only reached #2 on the Modern Rock charts, which is surprising considering how ubiquitous that song was. Unfortunately, I can’t figure out who they lost out to and whether it was in 1995 or 1996.
Nothing compares to 1991
Oasis, easily. Silver and bronze to Alanis.
