Best #1 Single of the Year: 2015

“When I’m With You” by Sheriff was released in May, 1983, and hit #1 on Feb. 4, 1989

I’m disappointed to see no one voted for the Wiz Khalifa/Charlie Puth duet . Nice song, I should have voted for it.

It’s funny how no matter what the trends in pop that we perceive, the #1 songs are always dance/pop songs. That indie pop thing where there are a lot of "oh oh oh"s and odd instruments may be heavily promoted right now, but people still like the same basic stuff for the last 40 years: does it have a beat? Can I dance to it? Good enough!

Yeah, it is unusual in this day and age for a song to take so long to become a hit and even back in the day such a gap was probably rare enough too.
FWIW I detest “Hello”.

That’s as good a set of criteria as any. My biggest earworm of the year is

99 Souls - The Girl is Mine

which has been floating about all year, but only got officially released a few weeks ago. It’s a Destiny’s Child/Brandy mashup by a couple of British house DJs, but it’s also a neat wee slice of dance pop perfection. Decent video too,

I’m not poet enough to express my utter detestation for the song “Cheerleader.” He should just get a Realdoll and be done with it!

But then I’m the only one who voted for “See You Again.” So what do I know?

I do like “Uptown Funk” it’s just incredibly fun, and always cheers me up. But “See You Again” is deeply touching.

I’m a lot more fond of Charlie Puth’s solo version. It’s a good song, but Wiz drags it down, and his part is quite literally tacked on - the studio bought the rights to Puth’s music and shoehorned Wiz into it so they could put it on the Fast & Furious soundtrack.

The problem with ~ 91% of the truly bad songs since 1967 is that they have nothing whatsoever going for them except for an intractibly monotonous beat for people with no sense of rhythm to utilize in their attempt to dance.

** thinks **

Make that 1767.

Oh yeah, there’s tons of awful music out there like that, just pointing out that our perception of trends in music changing doesn’t really seem to be reflected at the top of the charts. The basic formula for a #1 hit in 2015 seems to me pretty much the same as it was 1975, when dance music really started to get big.

Right now on all the commercials and on radio I keep on hearing this indie pop stuff so I was under the impression that music was really popular, but much like alternative in the 90s it’s not really showing up at the top of the singles charts. The last non-dance genre to consistently top the charts was 80s hair band ballads.

I voted for “Uptown Funk” even though I love love “Hello.” I think “Uptown Funk” is just more “general topic” than that of “Hello.”

“Bad Blood” was pretty good. I cannot get the appeal of “I Can’t Feel My Face.” I’ve given it many chances!

I will vote for “What Do You Mean?” as “First JB song I’ve ever heard” It’s not bad.

My favorite of the year is Elle King’s “X’s and O’s” followed by Nate Rateliff’s “SOB.”

I like “Cheerleader”, and for the longest time I thought it was just a Caribbean/regional hit. Nice to know it is not! So I voted for it, a bit of sunshine and happiness in an otherwise gloomy serious list.

I take out “Uptown Funk” out of it because I don’t like Bruno Mars’ vocals and the song really does not appeal to me. I switch stations when it gets airplay.

There are other songs by The Weeknd that I like more.
