Best #1 single of the year retrospective: 1990

Obviously YMMV. Sounds like your teenage anger might have a few issues. Hey, I liked Ted Nugent when I was 15. I got better.

Enjoying the references to other bands/music happening at this time. I was just an idiot for Social Distortion - 3 chords and truth with a nasal whine. The La’s/Lee Mavers - There She Goes is such a surprisingly durable song. A confection that stands up well. So many others…

Why because they remind you of your old hag status or because the music style is dim?

Canada has the best #1 songs in terms of variety, of all three nations. This holds true for especially for the 1980s and 1990s. The UK charts are really bad, especially their 70’s charts.

I listened to the songs I thought I did not recognize, and it seemed that I do not know the Tommy Page song. I do recognize the Sweet Sensation single. The Page single is very cheesy and bad, even in terms of cheesy music. He sounds like a teenage boy. No wonder it is forgotten.

Michael Bolton single: Do not care for it.
Paula Abdul: Very dated sounding, not her best, I have seen the video with a cartoon cat or something.
Alannah Myles: My opinion of this song has varied, some parts are good, others are okay. I do not love it.
Taylor Dayne: Surprisingly better than some of these other songs, seems she vanished. Okay.
Sinead O’ Connor: This song has been played to death and gets frequent airplay on 90’s format stations. It is okay, not bad, but I do not love it. The video with a bald Sinead up close and a tear falling is iconic though.

Madonna’s “Vogue”: Another one of a handful of classics by Madge, no wonder she is the Queen of pop, her material holds up pretty well.

Wilson Phillips: “Hold On” is their best song. “Release Me” is not bad, but not as good the former.
Roxette’s song is okay, never liked this group overall. The New Kids On The Block, Sweet Sensation, Glenn and Bobby duet are overall forgettable and do not warrant a comment. Same with James Ingram and Stevie B, not good at all! Nelson’s song I think was crap, and I have seen them, two twins are that garbage.

I voted for Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love”, the intro, background music, her voice and just everything is pretty well. I’m surprised I have only voted for it. A good break out single to kick off a mega successful decade for a young artist.

I would have voted for “Praying for Time” by George Michael, a great song, somber subject, nice powerful lyrics and the echo effect of his vocals. It is off George’s second solo album “Listen Without Prejudice”, which while it did not sell as much as “Faith”, I think was his creative peak.
Great album.

The Jon Bon Jovi solo hit, Maxi Priest, Janet Jackson, other Mariah Carey entry, Whitney Houston songs are just okay.

So yeah I voted for Mariah.

I can completely understand being sick of that song and how incredibly overplayed it was. But dismissing it out of hand and comparing it to pop garbage like Celine Dion is, to me, just silly. And when you think Bon Jovi is better? Dear God, like Sahara Tea said, we are different people. Nothing Compares2 U doesn’t rely on stolen bass lines, it’s not a crappy hard rock ballad, it’s not overproduced boy band crap, and it’s not techno dance garbage. It’s a real song, stripped down and sung, passionately, by a talented vocalist (and head case). Be angry all you want at how popular it became, but it would still be a great song if no one had ever heard of it.

Songs l liked from 1990:

“Hippy Chick” by So Ho
“Here’s Where the Story Ends” by the Sundays
“Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode
" Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains
“Head Like A Hole” by Nine Inch Nails(could have been late 1989)
“Pump Up the Jam” by Techno Tronic
“Cherry Pie” by Warrant
“Freedom” by George Michael
“Strike It Up” by Black Box
“Groove is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite
“Been Caught Stealing” by Jane’s Addiction

"Other songs I liked from that year.

“I Wish It Would Rain Down” Phil Collins
“Suicide Blonde” INXS
“The Only One I Know” by Charlatans Uk
“I’m Free” Soup Dragons
“Step On” Happy Mondays
I think Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” was released or re-released this year, though it could have been from the 1980’s. Correct me if I am wrong.

This was the year Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed according to Wikipedia. I’m surprised MC Hammer was not on this list, I could have sworn “You Can’t Touch This” was #1!~

All top tunes. Groove is in the Heart was kept of the top spot in the UK by the Steve Miller Band I think. It was probably some jeans advert on TV using an old tune - there was a lot of that going on at the time. :dubious:

Maybe I don’t recognize rap anymore, but which song was this? The Maxi Priest song? It had rap elements (IIRC), but then, so did Blondie’s Rapture, which also hit #1.

Definitely a year where I didn’t listen to a lot of pop - many of these songs I didn’t recognize even after YouTubing them.

This year, I’m giving my vote to James Ingram, a (seemingly) near-forgotten soul singer who sang a lot of songs that helped people get laid. It really is more of a lifetime achievement vote, but since his song stands out just slightly more than the others (except for Sinead, and it’s not like 2U needs my help to win this year) for me… well, there it is.

Also… the Whitney influence is strong this year, isn’t it? Other than Whitney herself, there are 2 other artists (at least) that vocalize like her.

I remember the first time I heard Sinead O’Connor. I was lifting weights and I was disappointed that the song was so slow. But at one point, I became so engrossed that I just dropped the damn barbell on my chest.

Good thing I wasn’t much of a weightlifter or that would have caused some real damage.

Remember when Mariah Carey was just a pretty girl with a very pretty voice before she became (or was revealed) to be the 10-tons of crazy and started melisma-ing all over the place for no real reason? “Vision of Love” gets my vote.

I voted for “Blaze of Glory” by Bon Jovi, one of their better songs IMO. “Nothing Compares 2 U” was a very tempting choice, but I couldn’t get past the sideshow that is the rest of O’Connor’s career. “Vogue” and “Praying for Time” were the other contenders. Back in the day, I loved “Because I Love You,” but that song sure sounds dated. Same goes for some of the New Jack Soul-type of crap like “She Ain’t Worth It” (which I’ve never even heard of before today).

As I mentioned upthread, “Step By Step” finishes dead-ass last.

I totally agree with you, as regular readers of SDMB already know.

“Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla ice.

:smack:

Yeah, didn’t listen to that one as I recognized the title… forgot it was a rap.

Still… I prefer to give Blondie the title of “first rap to reach #1” just… because.

Wikipedia says* Ice Ice Baby* is hip hop. That was news to me.

I was wondering when someone would mention the “Madchester” scene.

I agree with the crowd this time. Nothing compares 2 Sinéad’s Prince hit.

I voted for Phil Collins, but it was between him and Sinéad. Glad she is ahead in this poll, that was a good song.

Hmmm, looks like I skipped over *Nothing Compares 2 U * and Praying for Time and those two songs were very serious contenders, especially the former.

All things considered, I keep my vote, though. Sinéad O’Connor’s cover is great but Black Velvet’s sweaty shuffle has more edge. And Alannah’s husky voice is sexier.

Actually, through some unusual set of circumstances, I heard this song day in day out for almost a year and still loved it. As I said in the 1989 thread, I was in Canada when it came out and it was on tv all the time. When I came back to Belgium, the song was still unknown (in those days, it took some time for songs to cross the Atlantic) but it started getting airplay very soon afterwards and was a hit by spring 1990. Finally, I went to France on holidays with my parents that summer and Black Velvet was on heavy rotation (unitl recently, France was always notoriously slow in adopting English language hit singles). So, from September 1989 until August 1990, that song was always there in the background and I still wasn’t tired of it? That’s a winner.
