Best AC/DC Album

I do not know a lot about AC/DC, so can someone tell me what their best (or a really good) album?

Is “Back to Black” a best of?

Firstly, Back in Black is not a best of. It was the first album AC/DC recorded after the death of their lead singer, Bon Scott.

Secondly, I would recommend Let There Be Rock, Powerage, High Voltage, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and Highway to Hell, roughly in that order. Back in Black is also very good, but IMHO, AC/DC with Bon Scott was far better than with Brian Johnson.

My favorite is definitely Highway to Hell. If you like what you’ve heard of AC/DC on the radio, you won’t go wrong with Highway to Hell.

I like post Bon Scott AC/DC better - his voice can be pretty shrill, IMHO.

Back In Black

My faves, in approximate order:

  1. Highway to Hell
  2. Let There Be Rock
  3. Back in Black
  4. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
  5. Fly on the Wall

I may be the only one on Eart who likes Fly on the Wall, and, honestly, it’s been YEARS since I listened to it, but I loved it as a kid.

Highway to Hell is one of the 2 or 3 best heavy rock albums of all time, in my opinion.

Jesus, AC/DC fucking RULE!!

hrh

I agree.

I really get into the AC/DC Live CD. A lot of their more played songs, and they are one of the bands that keeps the live version of a song pretty in line with the radio/recorded version.

My favorites:

  1. Back in Black
  2. Highway to Hell
  3. For Those About to Rock, We Salute You
  4. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Several of my favorite AC/DC songs aren’t on any of those albums, though. “Whole Lotta Rosie” and “It’s a Long Way to the Top If You Want to Rock & Roll” are among their greatest tracks ever, but the albums they appear on just aren’t very good.

If you want a good AC/DC sampler collection, you might like “Who Made Who” (a group of AC/DC songs used in Stephen King’s awful movie “Maximum Overdrive”).

Have to be a Bon Scott-era album. Probably my favorite is Highway to hell, although High Voltage (it’s got The Jack, fercrissakes) and Let There Be Rock (Problem Child) are way up there as well…

More humor, more real menace and it was all new at the time.

For someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about AC/DC, but would like to get a sampling of their music…there are three albums that would be the best first try.

*Back in Black *is not a greatest hits album. Back in '81 when the album was released, four songs got radio air-play: “Back in Black”, “Hell’s Bells”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, and “Let Me Put My Love Into You”. However, these days, every song from that album gets radio airplay. I, personally, do not like the album much except the all-time AC/DC classic “You Shook Me All Night Long”. However, it has a ton of familiar riffs and is chock full of sing-alongs that every AC/DC fan knows by heart.

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is perhaps the most “radio-friendly” of the Bon Scott days of AC/DC. “Dirty Deeds…” is a great song in itself. However, the album also contains another all-time AC/DC classic in “Big Balls”. Plus, the album contains my all-time favorite AC/DC song “Ride On”: a great blues sampling which contains a lot of dynamics.

Who Made Who is a pretty good sampling from various days of AC/DC. It contains a few of their most famous hits from the late '70’s to the early '80’s including “Sink the Pink”, “Shake Your Foundation”, “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, and “Ride On”.

My all time favorite AC/DC album is *Blow Up Your Video[/i}. Perhaps that’s only because it’s the album that got me into AC/DC…but I still can’t get over how cool some of those songs still are: “That’s the Way I Wanna Rock and Roll”, “Heatseeker”, “Mean Streak”, and “This Means War” still rank near the top of my all-time AC/DC favorites.

My favorite Bon Scott era album is definitely Highway to Hell. Not a bad song on the album…and Scott did the band much more justice than Johnson.

I’ve always wished that Bon Scott had sung on Back in Black.

Me too, even though it’s not what got me into AC/DC, I try and take this on every trip I go on, it’s been all over the world.

I would either suggest Black in Black or Who Made Who, don’t think you can go wrong with either one of those.

Is there a AC/DC Best Of-Greatest hits? Please someone tell me.
Thanks, Intaglio.

I’m sure Bon would agree with you on that…

I would still take Bon Scott over Brian Johnson…his voice just sounds strained, like he is pinching a loaf. Don’t get me wrong, I still like the post-Bon AC/DC, but Bon Scott was the man IMHO.

Shoot, I like High Voltage and Highway to Hell…

“A Touch Too Much” of of Highway to Hell is one of my favorite non-radio airplay AC/DC songs.

Bon Scott must agree with me…as I was typing this, “The Girl’s Got Rhythm” came on the radio…LOL

For the unintiated, “Who Made Who” isn’t a bad place to start. But personally I’d suggest getting both “Highway To Hell” for a listen to their most consistently good album with Scott, and “Back In Black” for the same with Johnson. Since “BIB” AC/DC has pretty much just repeated the same formula, but “BIB” has better riffs and songs. Though I will admit that I agree with hrhomer that “Fly on the Wall” had a couple of really under rated gems on it.

I just need an AC/DC CD to listen to at work, but I don’t want to bring 8 CD’s just one good Best Of/Greatest - AC/DC.

  1. Highway to Hell
  2. Back in Black
  3. Notgonna do it.
