Best aftermarket directional finder for cars

To give you an idea of how little I know, I can’t even remember the three-letter acronym for these things, but you know what I mean. The talking map that people put in their cars to help them figure out where they’re going. “Take the next right turn, no, not there, dummy, the one you just passed…”

MY current gf has the world’s worst sense of direction, and refuses to learn how to read a map. Honestly, I think she’s retarded sometimes, the way she looks at me when I suggest that a simple map could solve her problem. It’s like I’m suggesting she take a doctorate in sub-atomic physics. She won’t even buy a maop to keep in her car, so when we’re riding, it’s pretty much a non-stop argument–where are we going, how do we get there, are we lost, which way do we turn…it never ends. To get from point A to point B in her town, which are three blocks apart, she sometimes drives to her house, which is six miles from either A or B. Anyway, her birthday is coming up, and I’m thinking maybe I’ll buy her one of these things. (I know, I’m just a big fuzzy romantic kind of guy…)

I would prefer one that’s fairly easy to install, since I think I know who’s going to do the installation, but what else do I want? Please share your recommmendations, experiences, as well as particulars that would be useful with a person whose sense of direction is extremely limited–that is, are any of them better than others at explicit and clear directions, or is it all pretty much the same? Thanks.

The term you’re looking for is GPS. My son worked as a courier in the DFW area, and he recommends the Garmin Nuvi-260. It’s an aftermarket, windshield mount, turn-by-turn, voice-generating guide. He loves his, and uses it to find his way to unknown addresses daily. He’s a little unsure on the price, but remembers it to be int he 260 dollar range.

Hope this helps.

On edit… Seems the price has dropped in the last year (based on a quickie web search)

Okaaay. Searching the web a bit more diligently; I discover that Garmin has dropped that particular model.

Sorry 'bout that. I need to read a bit more carefully next time. Hopefully it will serve as an example of what you need.

Love my Garmin. Love it, love it, love it, I actually chose to put it in my new Toyota instead of the factory option they offer.

User friendly, nice graphics, voice and map directions, and lots of fun goodies. Mine has a mount that sits in one of my cup holders (I can’t stand the windshield mount).
