In my experience, inkjet does not keep the cost down. The initial purchase price is lower, but if you print a lot, the cost of the ink cartridges quickly make up for the difference. And if you don’t print a lot, you’ll end up with clogged nozzles.
The only reason to get an inkjet is if you really need color. Personally, I’ve decided that the occasional color printing I do is not strictly necessary, and I can get by with a monochrome laser. I’ve been very pleased with my Canon MF4150. (When I absolutely need to print a photo, I just stop by Kinkos and use their self-service color printer, which produces better prints than any inkjet printer.)
