I’ll be soon moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and so I’ll have to start the house hunt soon. In another thread, I got a couple of suggestions, but I think I could do with more.
What are the areas I should be more interested in, and the areas I’d better avoid? For better focus, I’ll be studying in the University of Newcastle, so ease of transport is sorta vital.
Of course, if you happen to have a room/flat/house/whatever available for rent, just let me know… I know it’s unlikely, but you never can tell, I suppose.
The most well-to-do areas are in the north of Newcastle; Gosforth and Jesmond.
You could also try looking south of the river. I live in Whickham which is a fairly good place to live, near the MetroCentre, and there might be some reasonably good rents there although I don’t know any offhand.
I’d avoid some of the areas of Newcastle that have a bad name, such as Benwell and Scotswood, as well as Bensham in Gateshead.
Thank you, ** bluecanary**. The problem is, I don’t know what areas are to be considered “bad”, and this is why I posted. I’d appreciate any other suggestion you’d care to give me.
The near-by town of Jarrow, where I spent much of my formative years, was briefly referred to by the police as “Little Chicago”, following a shooting at the Red Hackle pub. I suspect they were being sarcastic though.
Avoid Byker and the West End.
My sister’s lived in Jesmond and Benton without any problems in either area (then again, it’d have to be one tough mugger who took her on … ). Me, I spent many years in Gateshead with only occasional bricks through my window.
I’ve been away from the north-east for a while now, but as I recall it, the Metro system was pretty darn good for getting around on. If you’re within walking distance of a Metro station, getting to and from the University is going to be no problem.
Once again I have to thank you, guys, especially Jennyrosity.
You see, I’m not just a coward; it’s just that the prospective Mrs Aruns will be moving in a few months later and, her being a waitress, I really don’t want her to walk around alone in a bad area in the middle of the night.
Whickham is a half-hour bus ride from the centre of Newcastle, the buses are reasonably reliable but I don’t know what your used to.
One of my great grandparents lives in the Byker Wall in Byker. It’s not actually too bad crime-wise. I don’t know about other areas of Byker though.
