Best bang for the speed buck in a Mac Pro used?

So I’m looking at upgrading without going new.

I currently have a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 with 9 gigs of ram and 4 maxed hard drives running Snow Leopard:

And it’s driving me crazy. I have ADD and I habitually run 40 programs at once and of course I choke the hell out of it.

While I can still get some decent money out of it (in combination with some other things…) I want to upgrade. I know that whatever I get I have to add memory for speed and performance.

But apart from that, what else is more important to responsiveness, the number of “cores”, or the Ghz on the processor? Or something else?

I’m sticking with a Pro because I like the expandability of towers, unless someone can convince me that investing in a much newer iMac will kick the ass of even the most memory-loaded tower in the same price range.

So what’s the Doper opinion on what to invest in to do the most possible to stop the Spinning Ball of Death and make everything super-zippy?

Never mind, I talked to a friend who works for Apple, I’d forgotten about him…

Christ, how do you run 40 programs at once? I thought I was crazy for having 40 tabs open in Safari on my lowly Imac.

Ridiculously easy.
