I’ve confined the options to the better-known Beatles covers. You get just one selection this time.
Besame Mucho
Even with all those choices, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict a conch.
Totally predictable choice here, I’m going with Twist and Shout, mainly for John’s torn-up vocals and the sheer fun of singing along with it. Though a very close second (and for similar reasons*) is Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey.
Third is Till There Was You, for sentimental reasons… The Music Man was one of the first musicals I remember my mom introducing me to, and I also really like the arrangement. And Paul’s vocals are so sweet and dorky (“I never sawwrrrr them winging…”).
You’re really on a roll, Mean Mr. Mustard! Getting a kick out of all these BeatlesPolls.
- except this time with Paul’s singing his guts out.
Boys is by far my favourite.
Not that it’s a great song. Not that the boys do an especially good rendition of it.
Just because, even with the rewriting, it’s still the Beatles singing a song about how wonderful boys are.
I had to decide between “Twist And Shout” and “Money”, and finally gave my vote to the latter. It’s just so full of R&B energy that you might get an impression of what they must have been sounded like at the Star Club or the Cavern (ditto for Twist and Shout). I also like the contrast between the in-your-face materialism and Lennon’s later political attitude.
I picked Twist and Shout myself; John’s vocals alone make it worthy.
Runners up for me would include You Really Got a Hold on Me and maybe Honey Don’t.
Rock on George, one time for Ringo.
ETA: Baby It’s You deserves consideration as well.
Money all the way for me, too. That song just rocks.
Although, if you get **Live at the BBC **- which is totally fun, listenable and brilliant - there are amazing versions of The Hippy Hippy Shake, Just a Shot of Rhythm and Blues and other lesser-known works alongside their better-known hits. And there’s a great version of You Really Got a Hold of Me…
I chose Boys because I enjoy playing to it during Rock Band.
I think Cafe Society polls should be multiple choice!
Twist and Shout wins (swoon John was dreamy), but I wanted to vote for Til There Was You and Roll Over Beethoven, too.
Twist and Shout, of course.
I also like Words of Love. I like the Buddy Holly influence in the Beatles.
