Best bit of wisdom from a song

And how true that is, Cali Swag District. How true that is.

From another Dead song - “If you plant ice, you’re gonna harvest wind.” If I sat and thought about it, I could probably dig up lots of great little tidbits of wisdom from Robert Hunter’s lyrics.

One of my favorite Grateful Dead lines is something that I have seen proven countless times right here on SDMB.

“You ain’t gonna learn what you don’t want to know…”

From the song Black Throated Wind, written by Bob Weir and John Barlow

Don’t take your gun to town.

Jason Mraz has a couple that are quite perspicacious for a lad of his tender years:

It takes no time to fall in love,
but it takes you years to know what love is

Also

Do you ever wonder what happens to the words that we say?
Do they bend, do they break from the flight that they take
and come back together again
with a whole new meaning and a brand new sense
Completely unrelated to the one I sent?

You gotta know when to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
Know when to run.
You never count your money
When you’re sitting at the table.
There’ll be time enough for counting
When the dealing’s done.

So oftentimes it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

My two favourites take opposite views on the importance of one person:

“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change”

  • Michael Jackson, ‘Man In The Mirror’

“See you’re really only very small
And life flows on within you and without you”

  • The Beatles, ‘Within You Without You’

“I’d rather be sorry for something I’ve done than for something that I didn’t do.” (Kris Kristofferson)

“I don’t say I’m no better than anybody else, but I’ll be damned if I ain’t just as good.” (Oscar Hammerstein II)

“Truth is just like time. It catches up and it just keeps going.” (Dar Williams)

“The hardest part of ending is starting again”

Linkin Park, Waiting for the End

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Pink Floyd - Time

Well there’s no use crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake

(This one’s surprisingly useful in real science labs.)

From Roundabout, by Yes. Its wisdom can’t be doubted. One day I’ll figure out what it means.

I will remember you
Your silhouette will charge the view
Of distance atmosphere
Call it morning driving thru the sound and even in the valley

I’m Not From Here, by James McMurtry

“…I should have been here
back about ten years
before it got ruined by folks like me”

:38 Special (Hold on Loosely):

Just hold on loosely,
But don’t let go.
If you cling too tightly,
You’re gonna lose control.

Stan Rogers (The Mary Ellen Carter):

And you to whom adversity has dealt a final blow,
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go,
Turn to and with all the strength if heart and arm and brain,
Like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!

'If you know what life is worth, you will look for yours on earth"

Peter Tosh - Get up, Stand up

another bit of lyric from the Dead in Black Peter

See here how everything lead up to this day and it’s just like any other day that’s ever been Sun goin up and then the sun it goin down

“Beware of darkness” -George Harrison
