Best Boss / Worse Boss On TV

OK here’s the deal, you’ve crossed into your TV.

You can pick any fictional show, drama, sitcom, as long as it’s a regular series past or current.

Who is the worst boss you can think of to work for?

Who would be the best boss to work for

I think either Larry Tate of Bewitched would definately be one of the worst. I’d beat him to a pulp for hiring and firing me at will. Louie De Palma of Taxi would also be high up on my “S-list”

I think Mr Drummond of “Diff’rent Strokes” would be a good boss to work for. He was always fair, supported unions, affrimative action and made sure his employees were treated well.

So…What would be the best boss to work for on TV and worst boss?

Your choices are…

Ok, totally unoriginal here, but David Brent of The Office would definitely count as being the worst boss.
Marc Anthony in Rome would count , in my eyes, as best boss ever.

Michael Scott, Branch Manager Scranton Office, Dunder Mifflin (A Division of Sabre) would probably be the worst, simply because he is an idiot and a jackass.

Jack Donaghy, Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming for General Electric would probably be one of the best. Winner of the Amory Blaine Handsomeness Scholarship, he worked his way through Princeton by working “the day shift at a graveyard, and the graveyard shift at a Days Inn”. Later attended Harvard Business School where he was voted “Most.”

I wouldn’t mind working for Lou Grant from Mary Tyler Moore.

Ha ha ha. I can’t tell which is funnier: that these tidbits were in the show (presumably), or that you remembered them. Anyway, TV bosses seem to generally be ogres, and so I’m having a hard time coming up with one that I’d want to work for. I don’t know, maybe Donald Trump. Does he count as a TV boss?

I’d say:
**
Malcolm Reynolds** - Best Boss. He lets you do your thing, makes jokes, cares for those under him, and takes things very seriously when the needs be. He also isn’t afraid to do the right thing when it is very, very right.

**David Brent **- Worst Boss. Yeah, he’s totally incompetent in management. He’s actually closer to reality of many managers I’ve known. He’s a complete moron and never has his act together.

Only if Cicero were giving him a hand.

Worst boss has to be Montgomery Burns.

Runner-up: Alan Brady (The Dick Van Dyke Show).
Best boss: Sam Malone (Cheers)
mmm

I haven’t watched MI-5 (US) / Spooks (UK) since the third season, but I was always very impressed with Harry Pearce on that show as a boss. He was tough-minded but very sensible and magnanimous.

There’s a scene in (IIRC) the first season, where three of his subordinates have flagrantly disobeyed him but have retrieved valuable information. He calls them into a meeting, and he’s furious with them – you think he’s going to tear them apart and ignore what they’ve learned, but no. When he sees they’ve got great info, he calms down, listens to them, and revises his own plans to accommodate their intel very judiciously, praises them for their good work, and then ends the meeting with, “You’ll forgive me if I don’t hug you all.” Awesome boss.

I always liked Jack Gallo as boss on Just Shoot Me!
I would not last five minutes working for Gregory House.

Leo from the West Wing (Jed might have been the President, but Leo was the boss). Leo was perhaps the greatest TV boss ever - so long as his subordinates were brilliant, dedicated, loyal, motivated, idealistic and willing to work 25 hours a day. Aything less than that, don’t bother showing up at work.

Worst boss and worst company to work for- Mr. Spacely of Spacely Sprockets. George Jetson has worked for the company for the company how many umpteen years, and he still keeps getting fired at the drop of a hat?

Leroy Jethro Gibbs

I don’t think Ricky Ricardo would be a very good boss (band leader). His meddling wife causes all sorts of problems, all the time, and he never does anything about it.

I probably wouldn’t mind working for Jack McCoy. He may get passionate about things, and sometimes be a little too liberal and literal, but he’s basically a good guy. I like the Good Guys.

I also think Jack McCoy would be a pretty cool boss since enthusiasm and world view match mine, even while he’s fighting the good fight.

Roseanne’s Keith Faber (Fred Dalton Thompson) would be one of the worse; one episode, he’s called her into his office and took out his meanness on his boss on her, just be he thought she had to take it.

Mr. Drysdale (The Beverly Hillbillies) was the worst, a cheapwad, petty tyrant and sac-lass wonder all rolled up into one.

I dunno. The first two minutes or so of this clip tell me otherwise.

Haha that’s hilarious, that’s one of the scenes that makes me think Mark Antony is a good contestant for best boss. Even though he could care less about Vorenus, he knows Vorenus is a follow orders type, and so uses his rank to order Vorenus back to life. Pretty good boss, in my opinion.

Nightmare or Ideal?

I’ll admit it’s been a while since I watched the series, but I never got the impression that he knew Vorenus well enough to know (or care) whether that would work on him.

Best boss: Lou Grant

Worst boss: Captain Kirk
