What do you recommend?
What I use - and I would love to hear something better - is dish soap in a pail of water. It doesn’t leave a film like Windex does.
Here’s a list of good auto glass cleaners. I use the spray bottle of Stoner Invisible Glass.
For the inside of the windshield I start with a good orange cleaner to get off the crud then Stoner.
One thing I’ve noticed after a good cleaning: my old windshields have a ton of tiny little dings from over the years that create “sparkles” in the sun. The view thru the windshield actually improves after a bit as those get filled in and stop glinting.
The problem with cleaning the inside of the windshield is that whatever is being off-gassed from the dashboard causes a hazy film on the glass that’s super noticeable when sunlight and headlights hit it. You can use all the Windex you want, but it doesn’t cut through this stupid film. Nothing I’ve tried works particularly well
Another vote for Invisible Glass. I also use their “Reach and Clean” tool which makes the process a lot easier. They sell bundlesof the cleaner along with the tool.
I use Sprayway and a clean cotton cloth, not microfiber.
The best thing I’ve found, like Voyager, is diluted dish soap and water. And it takes several applications, then rinse with straight water and dry with a microfiber towel.
I want the people who detail the name brand Cars & SUV’s used in TV series like Criminal Minds, FBI, Madame Sectary etc. to come do mine once a week. Best looking windshields by far, cleanest tires and running gear even discounting they are new …
I also use Sprayway.
Armor All glass wipes unless its really hazy; in which case I go to a mixture of ammonia and water on a rag.
They’re spendy but I love my Norwex glass cleaning set. It’s a microfiber cloth that you just wet with plain water and wipe the windshield/windows/mirrors. Then there’s a polishing cloth - smooth, no texture to it that you use to dry the glass. It works great. No smudges or haze.
You could probably do the same with an inexpensive microfiber cleaning cloth from WalMart and one of those cleaning cloths that come with eyeglasses.
Huh, people clean the inside of their windshields?! I seldom have a human passenger in my Jeep, but a few weeks ago my gf rode with me and she freaked out over my windshield.
The right tool helps. My Grand Cherokee’s windshield has hard to reach areas. I use a tool like this — https://www.amazon.com/Stalwart-75-CAR1031-Windshield-Cleaning-Tool/dp/B074Q6S9B8.
It helps to easily reach all of the glass. I’ll even put a folded newspaper on it to polish and sparkle the glass.
The thread is focusing on solutions, but this tool helps.
Yeah, they do. Do you keep the top down on your jeep a lot? In a car with a more typical top over time the windshield develops a haze on the inside which is extremely noticeable in the glare of the sun and headlights.
Upon the recommendations in this thread, I gave Invisible Glass a shot this weekend. Wow, it works really well. Thanks all
I’m surprised to see people reporting that Windex is a bad choice. I’ve been using Windex for years to clean the insides of my windshields, no problems.
But if you haven’t used a good glass cleaner you might not realize the situation. The first time I used Invisible Glass it was just “Wow, this is different!”
Sprayway is one of the better ones. Although I was a skeptic, I now just use a damp Norwex cloth and it works great. Rinse the cloth frequently so you don’t smear dirt around. Norwex is kind of expensive and probably any similar microfiber cloth would do a good job.
Prior to microfiber, Sprayway and (believe it or not) wadded up newspaper for wiping.
Another vote for Invisible Glass and some good old fashioned newspaper.
+1
I have a newer Ford Escape. It has a HUGE windshield, and it’s almost impossible to reach down and get the bottom edge and corners clean.
Then I found this.
For 99¢, I figured it was worth a try. And, it works great!
I dampen a piece of paper towel, and put it over the microfiber cloth, and it gets the entire windshield clean.
