Bloom County, in it’s time, was by far the best. It hasn’t aged very well, I’m afraid.
Here’s a vote for Bloom County as best ever. The cast of characters was much richer for this strip than for Calvin and that gave this strip more different directions that it could explore. The drawings were well done, comics done by someone that can draw are always better than comics done by someone that can’t (need I say Cathy?). The humor was first rate, at times downright silly but at other times the sarcasm was biting.
Best current strip- Prince Valiant. This is the highlight of my Sundays. The artwork is at a whole other level and the story lines are imaginative and suspenseful.
I’ve been wrong plenty, but I don’t think this is right. Can anyone verify?
Bloom County was indeed the best ever. Calvin & Hobbes could sometimes get just a bit too whimsical for my taste.
Just because it was mentioned in this thread and I’m a negative sort of son-of-a-bitch, I would also like to add that Non-Sequitor is crap. It tries way too hard to be zany and cuttin-edge, but it is really just trite and unoriginal, and that includes its quasi-intellectual title.
But I only feel the need to add this because no one ever asked me before.
Best ever: Krazy Kat
Those are three of my all time favorites. My current favorite is For Better or For Worse.
Best ever: The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes
Best currently: Dilbert
I’ll second you on this.
Get Fuzzy isn’t as well known right now but it’s my current #1. Get Fuzzy with Bucky, Sachel, and Rob.
And I miss Calvin and Hobbs. Someday they might make a comeback.
Funny that no one here has mentioned azumanga daioh.
My favorites ever are
Peanuts
Barnaby
Krazy Kat
Little Nemo in Slumberland and
Calvin and Hobbes.
My favorite print strip today is probably For Better or For Worse.
Definately Pogo…Little Abner, also, even though the strip declined in later years. I’d also suggest Terry and the Pirates
Far Side
Bloom County
Calvin & Hobbs
and
The Neighborhood
Bloom County was the best.
Currently:
Tom the Dancing Bug
Calvin & Hobbes
the Peanuts
I’d say The Far Side for sheer cleverness and wit.
Maakies for best artwork and dark humor. www.maakies.com
Check it out if you like dark humor. Its the best!
“Being drunk is the best feeling in my poor world.”- Drink Crow
I disagree. I recently reread the entire set of Bloom County books and realized again what a great imaginative mind Berke Breathed has. My favorite story lines were the Opus/Lola Granola relationship, Steve Dallas and his mother, and Oliver Wendell Jones and his father.
Best. Comic Strip. Ever.
Looks like I’m not alone in my love for Calvin and Hobbes. My fav still in syndication is The Boondocks. Good stuff, but C&H it is not.
Boondocks and Get Fuzzy are the only reason I read the comics page any more. Stupid Yahoo homepage doesn’t have Get Fuzzy so I look at FoxTrot instead which used to be riotous but has fallen off.
Apparently, I am the only one with the courage to claim Calvin & Hobbes is the best strip ever.
Best ever: Calvin and Hobbes
Best now: Zits
I forgot Maakies!
