Inspired by another current thread that is discussing whether the campfire singalong is dead or not, it got me thinking about one of my most favorite things. I’m not sure what it is about how my mind is wired when it cones to music, but I really emotionally connect to large groups of people singing together. I mean I can easily become weepy eyed when it’s done right. And by right I don’t necessarily mean well sung, but just real emotion does it for me. I’m a middle aged guy who own three chainsaws, but a good audience participation brings me to tears.
So, I love me some audience sing-a-longs. I go to a LOT of live music performances, and I’ve heard/participated in quite a few good ones over the years, but what say you?
Post up your pic for the best audience participation. Ideally a you-tube or link to the audio, with instructions on what part of the song to skip to for those that don’t want to hear the entire song.
So, here are two get us started:
Don’t Look Back In Anger - Noel Gallagher
No need to cut to any specific part, the audience does the whole damn song with him, but they take over at about 2:30. Love how Noel and the band are kinda dumbstruck at the audience and how good they are.
I have no idea what she is singing, but Lara Fabian can barely get through this song because of the emotion from the audience. Again, no specific spot in the song, it’s pretty much the whole thing.
At the live shows of “A Prairie Home Companion” there is always a huge sing-along at intermission and afterwards. The best I encountered was at Wolf Trap’s Filene Centre where you get everything from foreign ambassadors in the Opera boxes to rural Virginia families in blue jeans having a picnic on the hill. All singing together to a live band.
When I saw Danielle Ate the Sandwich live, she had the audience do the chorus for “I Put My Faith in a Man.” She, and they, were fabulous. That was one ruly crowd that night, let me tell you.
