Best decade for movie comedies?

As an observation, I voted for it, but I’m still surprised that the 30s is doing so well. These sort of polls tend to be biased toward more recent films, so the idea that it’s so well regarded is a delight.

I think this board skews a little to intellectuals and old farts. For the record, I voted for the '30s myself, almost entirely based upon the Marx Brothers and W.C. Fields.

I voted for the 30’s which deserves to win for Bringing Up Baby, Ninotchka, It Happened One Night, and the Marx Bros.

However, I am surprised at how good the 80’s were. I guess I didn’t appreciate what we had back then.

I will for the rest of my life irrationally cling to my belief that the 90’s did everything better than anyone ever. Also, fuckin’ Hackers.

I ended up voting for the 80s too, mainly because it’s the peak of the time from the 70s to the 90s which, we all seem to agree, is just utterly packed with great comedy movies.

I like some of the old-time comedy, but while I enjoy quotes from the Marx Brothers I don’t actually enjoy their movies. It’s mainly a matter of not enjoying pre-70s movies in general.

Wait - you’re using Hackers as an argument for your case?

Show me one single frame of that film that isn’t possessed of transcendent brilliance.

Here you go.

That picture is worth a thousand “exactlys”. We’re clearly coming at this from different angles.

Adjusted for ‘inflation’ other decades may have been equivalent to the 80s. But on their own merits, the 80s win. Yes, Minnies Boys made the 30s fabulous, but the other movies from that era aren’t quite up to the level of the 80s. They were under a lot of limitations back then. I’ll give the 30s a close second place to the 80s. I don’t think any other decade is in the same class as those two.
