You were already told to stop this. I’m giving you a formal warning this time.
Gambling is an adult vice and kids shouldn’t be exposed to it. People are drinking, smoking, gambling. It’s not a place for kids. Children don’t need to be everywhere. As an adult there are places I don’t want to see kids at. Bars, casinos, the track, R-rated movies, a wedding reception.
Wha…?
C’mon! You actually found that to be more offensive than my first post? ![]()
What the hell’s wrong with having kids at a wedding reception? A lot of people have kids at their wedding.
And the OP explained several times that his son is attending a martial arts tournament.
I didn’t say it was more offensive than the other post. I said you were already told to knock it off with this crap and you didn’t listen (several times). Don’t post in this thread again and don’t ignore instructions from the mods next time.
On the plane now while he sleeps. Sunday is the10 hour helicopter and rafting, will have him in early to avoid the worst of it.
I have no intent, pkbites, to take him anywhere near the gambling areas. As much as I would love to play hold em, this trip is not about me. In addition, this tournament is too important to his goals of being world champ to have him out late. Not all of us are shitty parents. If you feel otherwise you know where the pit is.
As to everyone else, can’t wait, two hours left on this miserable plane!
Las Vegas strikes me as Hell’s Antechamber; but puritanism is a worse disease than vice. I am quite sure that 50 yrs ago, even in America, children saw daily people smoking, people drinking and people playing cards at work and home, and came to absolutely no harm through routine exposure to these terrifying sights.
I’ve done the helicopter tour and kayaked from the Hoover Dam and both experiences were amazing. If your young one has a palate to enjoy most foods, then you will have no problem finding places to eat. There are many famous chefs who have restaurants in Vegas, and a whole world of cuisines. I hope you enjoy your trip!
Oo. I dunno about little ones, but I did skydive in Las Vegas, and it was pretty awesome. =)
Have fun!
I find that insulting to the dozens of challenged individuals peddling Lucky Dogs. I loves me a 2am LuckyDog!![]()
I took my kids to Vegas several years ago. Ages ranged from 8 to 15. They loved it!!!
We saw Cirque de Soleil Mystere, Jousting show at Excalibur, which is far better than the other jousting shows we’ve seen. Saw Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. And at that time, they still had the Star Trek Experience.
For dinner, ate at the buffet in Mandalay Bay and other restaurants around the strip.
Granted, my husband and I are not huge gamblers. Not gambling was not an issue for us.
With all the elaborate and flashy lights, my kids had a great time.
As do I… and I’m going to be enjoying one week after next! Taking my child to New Orleans for her first time. Don’t tell pkbites.
My post above was a Confederacy of Dunces reference. I would never besmirch the good Lucky Dog name.
We take our kids there a lot and sometimes get the pkbites reaction. “You’re taking the kids to New Orleans :eek::eek:” I always say yeah, to Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club on Bourbon, cause that’s all there is. I usually point out that kids actually, you know, live in New Orleans, and there are schools and churches in the French Quarter. I like to party more than most people, but even I can look at a city and see more than bars and strip clubs (makes you wonder about people who complain so much. Just what is it they want to do that kids can’t even be in the same city?).
The St Louis (?) Cemetery is a fascinating place for kids to visit.
Yeah, I just cabfare estimated it. $20-25 each way. Too pricey for a lone trip.
I’m getting into Vegas about 3-6 hrs before everyone else so I’ve got some time to kill. I’m probably going to end up slowly bleeding money at a blackjack table but wanted to see if I could get a decent, non-hungover meal in before the wanton debauchery that PKBites alludes to commenced.
Part of me wants to try the 10lb pho challenge but I don’t think I’ll be able to do it.
I’m genuinely surprised at how many of you are saying Las Vegas is too kid friendly. I’ve been going every two weeks for about 9 years (for work!) now and it has gotten FAR less kid friendly than it was before. Sure, there’s still stuff for kids to do, but after the "What happens in Vegas. . . " rebranding, a lot of the kid friendly stuff was done away with.
My suggestion-- if he’s a little nerd at all, like most of us here are-- would be the Atomic Testing Museum on Flamingo. It’s a Smithsonian museum and pretty darned cool. He’s young enough, though, that if he’s not into that sort of thing, then it of course won’t work. You know your kid :).
As far as food, one yummy, open late thing you might want to try (if you’re looking for something to take back to your room, for instance) is Capriotti’s. They are all over town and their sandwiches are to die.
I’ll always remember that cheap buffet in “Las Vegas Vacation”-where Clark’s BIL says “mmm…the rice pudding is extra drippy tonight”…and where the attendant barks out “that isn’t the chicken ala king…THIS is the chicken ala king”-over two identical tubs of yellow gorp.
Yeah, it’s my wife and I’s favorite place and we were married there in 2010. We get down there a couple of times a year and though we do enjoy a bit of Bourbon Street fun, we spend most of our time exploring the shops on Royal or Magazine, or listening to music on Frenchman or wherever Kermit Ruffins is playing on a given night. Mostly we just eat and eat and eat.
We have all kinds of kid-friendly plans in store for this trip including a walking tour for kids about the pirate history in the area (also have plans for City Park, a swamp tour, and a few other kid-friendly activities). Gonna be a great time.
There’s always the bus system - if you’re on the Strip, take the Deuce or SDX (Strip/Downtown Express) to Sahara, then transfer to an eastbound Sahara Express bus and get off at Maryland. A 24-hour pass is something like $8.
Got married there too! Mardi Gras day in front of the cathedral.
Take the street car uptown and eat at Camille’s or Jacques-Imo’s. Take the ferry (free) from Canal across the river. Check out the WWII Museum. Mulate’s is average food, but they’re family friendly and have Cajun music. Go to Mona Lisa’s for pizza/Italian…ooops, this is Vegas thread ![]()
I was toying with scoping out a bus route. I’m no bus snob - I used to bus commute. However it seems like a bit of a hassle albeit for “the best Thai restaurant in North America”. It’ll be a game-time decision I guess. I might end up bussing up to the North Strip for cheap craps/bj anyway. Or walk. I have a lot of podcasts to catch up on.
On a highjack of a highjack, I was just browsing some how-to-vegas sites and found:
http://cocktaildoll.com/didyouknow.htm
(Not particularly safe for work. It’s got a picture of a pantsless woman in a see-through shirt and strategically placed hair on the left)
An old, basic website with some “real” talk about cocktail waitressing, tips, etc. Anyway, what’s so pertinent about that? She’s a fan of the Dope and possibly a doper. Just thought that was neat. It may be old news for most of you but I thought it was interesting since the only vegas site that I know of is DMark’s.
Anyway, to get things back on topic, here’s a huffpo piece about bringing kids to Vegas:
