Four days in Vegas - what do do? What to avoid?

Three nights and four days in Vegas - going to Sin City the just after the more important day in the Christian calendar .

Tuesday to Friday - no kids!!! What’s the “Must Do” and the “I Can’t Believe I Paid For That!” things around the main strip area.

Cheap is good, too. We don’t really gamble so that’s not a big attraction. I may gamble $100 tops.

So - Hit me!

My favorite thing in Vegas was the 3-D movie that they played in the pyramid hotel. (The Luxor?) I would like to do that again ~ we saw the ocean movie and it was hard not to duck to avoid the jellyfish!

Other than that, we mostly liked to see all the free things - the outside volcano that erupts every hour, the Bellisimo water fountain show, the Pirates of the Carribean outside song and dance thing.

I also liked the old town area that we didn’t get to until our last day there. Drinks and gambling were cheaper and it has the cool block-long overhead light show.

Have fun!

Let me add that I’m a 41-year-old, balding, overweight man. The chi-chi dance club is O-U-T.

The casinos don’t like it if you enter the casino in the nude. With no pockets, you have no place to carry cash.

Bah. My credit is good.

The Bellagio fountains are really really cool, especially at night. They go off every 1/2 hour, and since they’re free, are definitely worth checking out. Also, there are gardens with more cool fountains inside the Bellagio that I like.

Just walking through Paris, Aladin, and Ceasar’s is fun (and also free). That’s about the extent of my experiences there, but I’d guess that walking through many of the other casinos is also quite an experience.

Just got back myself.

I second the 3-D movie at the Lux; it’s very well done.

DO see the Paris casino from the outside, if not from the inside. It reproduces portions 14 of the most beautiful structures in Paris, and each piece is lovely - most likely the closest to actual Paris I’ll ever get.

Don’t just see the water show at the Bellagio - go in! The garden displays are magnificent. And much of the interior decor at both it and the Paris is VERY attractive.

Last, but not least, the MGM Grand (corner of Las Vegas and Tropicana) has live lionesses in a nice habitat, and you can walk through it and look up at the bellies sprawled out on the plexiglass floor, or see them chase balls like kittens when the handlers throw them. AND there are cubs!

Well - let’s not get too cheap here. My wife and I have decided to go see at least one premium show, perhaps a top-level ($100 tkts) and a mid-level ($50).

She and our traveling partners want to go to a strip club, too. The “What happens in Vegas” commercials seem to be working. Got a good co-ed one?

Well, being something of a conisuer, I can say that there aren’t any “co-ed” strip clubs in the sense that they have nude men and women that I’m aware of. However, generally, women seem to prefer the all-girl shows anyway. Most all are very couple friendly, especially on weekday nights. The more upscale the better in this regard, IME. The low-end seedy places tend to attract the locals and degenerates instead of the “what happens in Vegas stays in Veas” crowd. Crazy Horse Too and the Spearmint Rhino are the most mainstream and well traveled as far as I know. At either you’re likely to spend a big chunk of cash and have a great time.

Yeah - “Co-Ed” in the sense that women and men are in the audience. On stage, I think we all expected women only.

I am, however, encouraging my wife to go see the “Thunder from Down Under” show as an aperitif  .

Of course I’m always concerned with food.

the breakfast buffet in Paris is one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had and definitely worth the short wait in line. Fresh made crepes, eggs benedict, omelets…blahblah. FANTASTICO

and there’s a new buffet in Treasure Island called DISHES and it is SPECTACULAR for dinner. We went there for dinner and then stayed for the Siren show which was corny, but a good waste of twenty minutes.

The Monorail. Get the unlimited 3-day pass for $40. Use it to go from the Harrah’s station to the MGM Station. It’s really good to wisk you from the mid-strip to the end of the Strip and avoid traffic. But if you’re staying as Caesar’s, for example, don’t use the monoral to go to the next station because it you have to then navigate through the casino. On your first day travel the entire monorail route; it’s like a ride that allows you to see the strip from a bird’s eye view.

The Wynn Las Vegas. You have to do the Wynn. I’m not telling you anything about it other than it’s the newest hotel-casino on the strip.

The Aladdin Buffet - Hands down the best buffet in Vegas. It has everything. An American station with carvings, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, seafood, and dessert. For the usual buffet price, you get a wide selection and it is well-prepaired by chefs. One word on the desserts - divine.

Incidentally, I was really impressed with the Bally’s buffet. The best $15 I ever spent. I ate my body weight in prime rib.

If you like Thai food, try Lotus of Siam. It’s fabulous.

What to do: Gamble
What to avoid: Tweaky Meth-heads.

I highly recommend Cirque du Soleil’s “O”. It’ll cost you about $100 per seat, but it’s worth it.

We’re driving to Vegas in early May - I think I will have to print this thread out and take it with us. Keep it coming, guys!

(Aren’t there any Dopers in Vegas for us to meet? Now that I’ve met a few Dopers, I want to meet all of them.)

Hi!

Ooh, your location says you’re on an air force base in Nevada - we plan to go out to the Extraterrestrial Highway and look at Area 51 (well, as close as we can get without getting arrested and stuff). Are you anywhere near there, Rand? Are you actually IN Area 51? Can you smuggle us in so we can see all the dead aliens and spaceships?

(I’m mostly kidding, but if you are nearby, we could certainly meet up for a beer. )

Las Vegas? You ARE going to see Avenue Q, aren’t you?
