I like Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere and prefer it to the other Cirque shows.
The Venetian has The Blue Man Group, if you don’t mind performance art, lots of percussion, strobe lights, non verbal communication, and yards upon yards of recycled paper. It also costs $98.50 for the balcony seating.
I loved 'em, though.
Unfortunatly I can’t get you onto Area 51. Shame really, I’d love to go there. Chances are it’s really boring.
But I am in Northern Las Vegas, about 15 miles from the strip at the most.
I was just informed that I should pop in and say hi. I go to Vegas once a month for work (no really, I SWEAR
) and Rand and I hang out. I’m not old enough to drink, but I’d love to say hi!
And to answer the OP: I’m totally lame, so I really want to go to the Atomic Testing Museum in Vegas; I think the museum is like $5 to get into and it supposedly has some cool stuff (it’s off of Flamingo).
I highly suggest spending some time by a nice pool! What hotel are you staying at? Some of them have some mind blowing pools. If you aren’t staying at one of the bigger, nicer places, you can sneak into a few of them. I suggest giving the Luxor’s pool a go (buy some drinks, so you don’t feel like a total leech :p), it is very nice.
I’ve also heard raves about the Belagio’s buffet (about $35). Apparently, the buffet there is actually worth the cost. Mandalay Bay’s was pretty good ($25).
Oh, and the very old, very dirty Golden Gate Hotel on Fremont Street serves the World’s Greatest Grilled Cheese. Seriously. Go. Spend $4. Eat. Thank me later.
Cheap stuff. Hmmm. Vegas isn’t so cheap anymore. That’s a huge bummer, isn’t it? What happened to $4 buffets and the like?
Excellent - so we’ve got RandMcNally and DiosaBellissima pencilled in for drinks (I don’t drink either, Diosa - going for beers usually means club soda for me). We’ll be in Vegas on May 6th and 7th (Saturday and Sunday), leaving on the 8th - does that work for you guys?
It works for me.
Drop me an email and maybe I can swing by to say hello as well.
I just saw the show Dragappella at the International Hilton - four hysterically funny drag queens (the Kinsey Sicks) singing songs you know, but with their own lyrics…tickets are only $45 each and worth every penny.
Also saw Hairspray at the Luxor - very good, non-stop music and great sets. Lots of fun.
Avenue Q is closing at the end of May, so try to see it before it leaves.
(Any of us locals can get cheaper seats for Hairspray and Avenue Q as they have a special deal for Nevada residents. We just have to show our drivers’ licence. Same thing with the Shark Reef aquarium at Mandalay Bay)
There is so much to do in Las Vegas, two days will fly by in a mega-second.
As mentioned, the Paris Buffet is the best in Las Vegas, but Wynn is also good, as well as Bellagio…none of these buffets are cheap, but they are worth every cent so pick one and splurge. You won’t regret it…well, maybe as you groan and can barely walk out after eating there, but you will remember that food selection for years to come…the dessert selection alone will make you cry.
Will do.
It probably will - that’s what I get for being a grazer, rather than a feast-and-famine eater. Buffets are wasted on me.
This is true. However, at something like $26.95 a pop, you’ll run out of gambling money real fast if you stick to the great buffets. Your money will go farther if you slum a bit, pick up a Fatburger or a Nathan’s Hot Dog or something now and again. Or at least go to a pay-as-you-go place once in a while; your money will go farther than at many of the buffets, and the Strip is littered with such places.
Go cruise the gardens at the Flamingo. It’s beautiful, and there are penguins and flamingos and a monument to Bugsy Siegel.
If you decide to get a ticket to go up in the Eiffel Tower, do it at night. The view of the strip is amazing. And I took that picture with my low-rent 2MP camera!
Shows: one of our favorites was “An Evening At La Cage” at the Riviera. Reasonably priced at $55 (and we got front row VIP seating for an extra two bucks), it was mighty hilarious.
Definitely see some Cirque du Soleil show if you never have. The Star Trek Experience is better than I thought it’d be.
Um, no. I was just there two weeks ago, and every hotel I was in on the strip had a guard posted at the pool entrance asking for room keys. The Hard Rock is particularly hard to get into. I stayed at the flamingo and they had a guard as well at their pool entrances. You can walk the gardens, but not the pool.
Go see either Lance Burton’s magic show or the Rat Pack tribute. Both are great.
I second (or third, or fourth even) the Wynn and the fountains. The volcano outside of . . . I forget, but you can’t miss it is also free and worth looking at. If you’re into guns, try The Gun Store. You can rent a whole selection of stuff you’d never have a chance to shoot, though I don’t think this falls into the cheap category.
If you want to kill two birds with one stone, go see “Zumanity”, a Cirque production. Lots of topless chicks, a few hot guys for the ladies, and a pretty well done production overall. The wife and I both liked it.
Any thought on the Penn and Teller Show at the Rio (I think)?
Maybe I’m alone on this, but The Gun Store lets you shoot fully automatic machine guns.. I promised myself I’d do this the next time I was there.
Zoomanity has been brought up more than once by our little traveling group. If you ignore the nudity, is it still a good show?
One the things I’m most not interested in is the big traditional stage show with nudity. The one where the topless woman comes out balancing a giant feathered & sequined headress, poses, and we’re all supposed to be thrilled to see a woman’s breasts.
Nothing wrong with breasts. Really, I’m a big fan. However, I’d rather see a good dancer or performer with great breasts than simply a set of stationary ones.
I’d love to see Penn & Teller but I’m the only one of our group. sigh
I saw the Blue Man show on a prevous business trip - I loved it! Wouldn’t mind seeing it again but the rest of the troup, again, is hesitant.
They’ve already bought tickets to the Pussycat lounge for one evening.
Hey, when a club says “proper attire”, what’s that? No jeans or T-shirts? Tennis shoes OK?
Anybody been to Delmonico’s? Wife is buggin for that one? What’s the dress code there?
No jeans, no tennis shoes. I’d say some stylish black pants and a button down shirt. Depending on where you go, no sandals for men. No hats. You have to look like a soap opera character on a casual day
Funny you should ask… I just saw the show last weekend. I am a big Penn and Teller fan, but I was not all that impressed by the show. Any fan will already have seen the material. The show is mostly lots and LOTS of talking by Penn, with maybe five tricks or stunts thrown in. I was hoping for much better for my $80 or so.
In the positive column, both Penn and Teller come out to the lobby after the show to shake hands, sign autographs and have their pictures taken… not behind a table, just hanging around. Very cool.
Weird, we used to always go to the Luxor (and by always, I mean as recent as last year). No guards, none of that jazz. The last two times I’ve gone (January and Feb.), it was way too cold to swim, so I didn’t bother even trying.
Well, if you DO want to use a nice pool that happens to be guarded, buy a spa pass (usually $20-$30) and you can spend the day at the pool (and spa). The only hotel I remember not allowing this is the Mandalay.
I think I’m bitter about it, probably because the Luxor in particular is popular and can get crammed by 9:00 am. I saw people at 11:00 at night marking out chairs with towels and books and crap trying to save their spot, and if a family of fifteen comes in from Binions to use the amenities I paid for it doesn’t seem fair, which is why what you said is right, either gamble at the swim up tables or buy some drinks…
but more and more the pools are guarded. PARTICULARLY the hard rock, but they’re so snotty it barely matters. GOD are they snotty.
