Title says it all, really. In your opinion, what’s the best live album that you’ve heard?
Jethro Tull’s “Bursting Out”.
UFO - Strangers in the Night
Allman Bros - Live at Fillmore East and James Brown Live at the Apollo are the correct answers but I love the UFO album…
Eric Clapton - Just One Night.
Live @ Leeds, of course!
A couple of others that I’ve been listening to lately:
Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour
10CC: Live And Let Live
Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out, by the Rolling Stones (someone already mentioned my first choice, which was the James Brown album)?
I’ve always kind of been partial to In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up, by Ministry.
But if I had to pick my absolute favorite live album, it’d be the 4 CD box set of The Band’s The Last Waltz.
This one’s got it.
**WordMan **beat me to the UFO one
Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous
Cheap Trick At Budokan (Budokan II is even better, IMHO)
Humble Pie Rockin’ The Fillmore
Derringer* Live*
Judas Priest* Unleashed in the East*
Foghat* Live* (don’t laugh, they kicked ass on that one)
Pat Travers Live! Go For What You Know
Mahogany Rush Live (the one from 1978, not the double live one so much)
Robin Trower Live (had the puke green 8-track of that)
…to name a few…the mid-late 70s was the Great Live Album Era.
Aside from the already mentioned very worthy entries for Jethro Tull and Robin Trower:
Blue Oyster Cult On Your Feet Or On Your Knees
Nirvana Unplugged in New York
Cream Wheels of Fire
My musical tastes calcified in 1978 but these are my favorites
Frampton Comes Alive
You Had To Be There by Jimmy Buffett
Hot August Night by Neil Diamond
Wings Over America
Little Feat “Waiting For Columbus”
Van Morrison “It’s Too Late To Stop Now”
The Band “Last Waltz”
Grateful Dead “Live Dead”
Derek and the Dominos “Live At The Fillmore”
Paul Simon “Concert In The Park”
Neville Brothers “Live From Planet Earth”
Talking Heads “Stop Making Sense”
Portishead - Roseland NYC
Butthole Surfers Double Live
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Jefferson Airplane, Bless Its Pointed Little Head
Grateful Dead, Ladies and Gentlemen… the Grateful Dead
The Band, Rock of Ages
Saunders/Garcia/Kahn/Vitt, Live at Keystone
Peter Tosh, Captured Live
Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Arc/Weld
Wilco - “Kicking Television”
Nirvana - “Unplugged in NYC”
Live In New York City - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Live At Carnegie Hall - Renaissance
The aforementioned albums by the Allman Bros., Neil Diamond and Jefferson Airplane.
Neil’ Young’s “Live Rust” is also exceptional, and I should have included it in my original post…
Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan.
There is only one: Deep Purple - Made in Japan
