Well this is just cheating. I’m not too much of a Cash fan (although he does have one of the sexiest voices ever), and will declare that I am not a country music fan at all, but this album would be served a terrible injustice if restricted to the category of “country music” alone. Which is not to say it isn’t country music, that is, but that it is so much more. Advice: Don’t listen to this album at work, especially if you hate your job.
Now then…
Sinatra and Basie Live at the Sands. This is actually my favorite album ever, and is the one I would have with me on the oft-mentioned deserted island hypothetical in which you are only allowed to bring one album.
Live In Leipzig by Mayhem. One of the defining black metal albums, and unusually for extreme metal live albums, far more powerful than the studio versions.
I agree! The only knock on this album is that it’s censored! I forget which song….Rollin’ Stone, maybe? There’s a definite bleep covering up Steve Marriott’s cussing in there.
A rock concert with no swearing allowed? That’s just bad form – gotta take a point or two off for that.
Ehh, I’ve had die-hard country fans try to show me “real country music,” and while it is good, and undoubtedly better than Rascal Flats, it doesn’t melt my butter.
“Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall”, recorded in 1963. It’s one of the all-time best live jazz albums, and not just in my opinion. Joe Morello’s drum solo on “Castillian Drums” stands as the pinnacle of jazz drumming.
While that is a great one, with the best climax of any live album in history, I actually prefer Bootleg Series vol. 6, live at Philharmonic Hall which has Dylan at the height of his acoustic phase, dueting with Joan Baez, and introducing some of the new music which would appear on Bringing it all Back Home - plus, joking with the crowd, something sorely absent in 1966. I suppose it was also more of a revelation to me, since I had many of the cuts from the “Royal Albert Hall” Concert since the early 1970s.
Some great ones have already been mentioned, so I’ll mention one of my personal favorites that I doubt anyone here has ever heard, but anyone who likes rock music, especially with some surf influence, should check it out:
I’ll have to look for that. And if I may cast another vote, the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert is damn good. Not quite the sound quality you’d expect today, but remixed very well.
