Best live album

Dionne Warwick in Paris

This album featured the song “Message to Michael” and showcased Dionne at the height of her voice.

Mine have been taken - want to see what others think.

Well this is just cheating. I’m not too much of a Cash fan (although he does have one of the sexiest voices ever), and will declare that I am not a country music fan at all, but this album would be served a terrible injustice if restricted to the category of “country music” alone. Which is not to say it isn’t country music, that is, but that it is so much more. Advice: Don’t listen to this album at work, especially if you hate your job.

Now then…

  1. Sinatra and Basie Live at the Sands. This is actually my favorite album ever, and is the one I would have with me on the oft-mentioned deserted island hypothetical in which you are only allowed to bring one album.
  2. Bobby Darin Live From Las Vegas.
  3. Bobby Darin at The Copa.

Or, country music is much more than you think it is.

There are lots of great live albums by people whose work I already have.

However.

The only Bruce Springsteen work I have ever bought is Live in Dublin which is a little bit of Springsteen material but just an over all joy.

… And another vote for Humble Pie Rockin’ The Fillmore. This still rocks HARD and sounds great.

Live In Leipzig by Mayhem. One of the defining black metal albums, and unusually for extreme metal live albums, far more powerful than the studio versions.

What about Mediolanum Capta Est?

I agree! The only knock on this album is that it’s censored! I forget which song….Rollin’ Stone, maybe? There’s a definite bleep covering up Steve Marriott’s cussing in there.
A rock concert with no swearing allowed? That’s just bad form – gotta take a point or two off for that. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ehh, I’ve had die-hard country fans try to show me “real country music,” and while it is good, and undoubtedly better than Rascal Flats, it doesn’t melt my butter.

Joe Cockers’s “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”.

Burning Spear - Live in Paris Zenith '88
If we consider compilations of live recordings from multiple venues:

John Hiatt - Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokan?

I prefer Dead to Maniac.

Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall”, recorded in 1963. It’s one of the all-time best live jazz albums, and not just in my opinion. Joe Morello’s drum solo on “Castillian Drums” stands as the pinnacle of jazz drumming.

Nobody ever remembers Santana.
Lotus Triple live album from 1974, but not released in the U.S. until the 90’s
Moonflower Multi-platinum release from 1977
Sacred Fire Released in 1993 along with a DVD by the same name
Live at the Fillmore 1997 release of the band performing in 1968
and even
Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles - Live

All essential, as far as I’m concerned.

While that is a great one, with the best climax of any live album in history, I actually prefer Bootleg Series vol. 6, live at Philharmonic Hall which has Dylan at the height of his acoustic phase, dueting with Joan Baez, and introducing some of the new music which would appear on Bringing it all Back Home - plus, joking with the crowd, something sorely absent in 1966. I suppose it was also more of a revelation to me, since I had many of the cuts from the “Royal Albert Hall” Concert since the early 1970s.

Add in Dream Theater’s Live Scenes From New York and you’ve got my 3 favorites.

Some great ones have already been mentioned, so I’ll mention one of my personal favorites that I doubt anyone here has ever heard, but anyone who likes rock music, especially with some surf influence, should check it out:

The Ziggens Live: Tickets Still Available

I much prefer Maiden Japan to Live after Death.

Golden Earring has three ‘unplugged’ albums, Naked, Naked II, Naked III. All of which I enjoy.

I’ll have to look for that. And if I may cast another vote, the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert is damn good. Not quite the sound quality you’d expect today, but remixed very well.
